  3. Hi May be a bit late now. But I have a contest between the units/halls. The best decorated nurse station/hall wins & they get get a prize, like a pizza party etc. Then I have a contest for residents by best decorated door on each unit/hall. Of course you need to get permission from the Admin. Let the charge nurse of the unit/hall schedule days off & let them decide who gets it off. Not all of the
  4. For the first time in more than a century, Hanukkah overlaps Thanksgiving. Commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime coincidence by mashing up more than your butternut squash. Collect up some votive s & use as a nontraditional centerpiece (Star of David). Serve some latkes (potato pancake) along with your green bean casserole.
  5. ADJOjnsonCity That is up to the council. They can set up the by-laws which will include this. I wouldn't allow it to be more than 3 years, which is still a bit long I think.
  6. Hello Everyone, I had to return a call today to a AD. My call call was screened & was told that staff is not allowed personnel calls. After explaining that it was a in fact a business call I was finally allowed to be transferred to thew activity office. This is not the first time I have ran up against this. I have also had AD's tell me they are not allowed to get calls at work. Now what I am wondering is how in the world do you run you department if you can't get calls? I mean we are to get volunteers in the facility, plan entertainment, do special events, don't even get me going on t

  17. Lots of suggestions offered. The only thing I can add is try to decorate the boards with a theme that could be use for 2 months in a row. The facility I worked at had 4 boards to decorate monthly. When you have to remove the calendars & all of the decorations, then re-decorate them & put the new monthly calendar up takes alot of time. Don't forget you still have to remove & put new calendars up in every residents room. Well this can take up almost your whole day & you haven't done any activities yet! So when decorating your boards try to keep this in mind.
  18. These behaviors, and others equally challenging, impact quality of life for both caregiver and recipient. While there are pharmaceuticals targeted at decreasing these behaviors, their efficacy is questionable. Side effects are a major concern, especially in the elderly whose body systems may be frail or who are taking drugs for other medical problems. The use of non-pharmacologic interventions, such as behavioral approaches that evoke a relaxation response, are increasingly recommended by dementia experts for implementation in care facilities and at home. Studies of alternative approaches

There are words in it that I think would make a fun activity that could lead to a discussion of slang words for your resident's generation. Here is the link: http://www.urbandictionary.com/ Have fun Pennie

  23. As posted by THCA website: As you have likely seen and heard on the news, a fertilizer plant in West, Texas, caught fire and exploded on Wednesday, April 17, leaving more than 100 people injured and many fire fighters missing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected by this tragic event, including our member facility West Rest Haven. Thankfully, the nursing home was safely evacuated ( use this link: Uhttp://www.usatoday.com/videos/news/2013/04/18/2093035/) and the residents who were evacuated are being cared for in eight nearby nursing facilities.
