I subscribe to Mary Jane Farms Magazine. This was a article in it. I have never heard of the hazards of wearing a bra. My grandmother was a firm believer in that you wear you bra 24/7 to prevent drooping. I am a 70's child & hated wearing bras. My mother would catch me without one & give me the riot act & make me put it back on. Today at my age I wouldn't go out in public without it. But it is the first thing I take off when I get home.
So after reading this article it made me think this would be a great topic to share with your female residents.
Share your thoughts on this with us & tell us what your residents have to say about it.
Should be a lively conservation.

Hi
May be a bit late now. But I have a contest between the units/halls. The best decorated nurse station/hall wins & they get get a prize, like a pizza party etc.
Then I have a contest for residents by best decorated door on each unit/hall. Be sure you post this in newsletter & bulletin boards. This way the family members can get involved.
I also do this for Thanksgiving & Xmas. For Xmas the staff gets a paid day off. Of course you need to get permission from the Admin. Let the charge nurse of the unit/hall schedule days off & let them decide who gets it off. Not all of the staff participates. Let her/him decide who these employees are. However you will be surprised how nice the facility looks. Plus less work on activities since you already so busy this time of the year. For Thanksgiving I have given away Turkeys, gift cards from local store etc.
-
For the first time in more than a century, Hanukkah overlaps Thanksgiving. Commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime coincidence by mashing up more than your butternut squash. Collect up some votive s & use as a nontraditional centerpiece (Star of David). Serve some latkes (potato pancake) along with your green bean casserole.

ADJOjnsonCity
That is up to the council. They can set up the by-laws which will include this. I wouldn't allow it to be more than 3 years, which is still a bit long I think.

Hello Everyone,
I had to return a call today to a AD. My call call was screened & was told that staff is not allowed personnel calls. After explaining that it was a in fact a business call I was finally allowed to be transferred to thew activity office. This is not the first time I have ran up against this. I have also had AD's tell me they are not allowed to get calls at work.
Now what I am wondering is how in the world do you run you department if you can't get calls? I mean we are to get volunteers in the facility, plan entertainment, do special events, don't even get me going on the people that want to come in during Christmas. So how are you expected to run a activity department if you can't receive calls? This is a policy that should be addressed & changed, don't you think?
So are you allowed to get calls at your facility?
How do you run your department, if you can't get them?

THOSE BORN 1920-1979 READ TO THE BOTTOM FOR QUOTE OF THE MONTH BY JAY LENO. IF YOU DON'T READ ANYTHING ELSE---VERY WELL STATED TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!! First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes. Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-based paints.. We had no child proof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags. Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat. We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle. We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this. We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank Kool-aid made with sugar, but we weren't overweight because, WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day.And we were OK. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ridedown the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all,no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or chatrooms....... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them! Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law! These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever! The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL! If YOU are one of them CONGRATULATIONS! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good . While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave (and lucky) their parents were. Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?! The quote of the month is by Jay Leno: 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?' For those that prefer to think that God is not watching over us..go ahead and delete this. For the rest of us...pass this ON!

Raising Funds for Alzheimer’s Dementia Research
The National Senior League (NSL) announced today that on July 16th it will host a National Senior Wii Bowling Day to benefit research into Alzheimer’s and dementia as well as related projects.
The NSL hopes to set a world record for the most senior Wii bowlers participating on a single day, asking Wii bowlers to roll a single game on July 16th. Each bowler will be ask to contribute $5 to be donated through the NSL to research into devastating diseases, including Alzheimer’s. In addition, the NSL will ask individuals and corporations to donate $1 for each recorded strike.
Dennis Berkholtz, started the NSL four years ago with the mission of providing senior’s with a fun, competitive and social environment and with the ultimate goal of raising money for Alzheimer’s/dementia. Berkholtz’s father suffered from dementia. “Using the NSL to raise funds for Alzheimer’s/dementia is my way of honoring my father for raising a great family and giving me the opportunity to achieve success both in sports and business,†said Berkholtz.
The NSL has established the NSL-ALZ Foundation to manage the fund raising efforts. The foundation will support Alzheimer’s/dementia research and support programs focused on the importance of early detection. It will also work to develop a program to recognize and honor Alzheimer’s/dementia caretakers with a vacation break from caretaker responsibilities.
The NSL-ALZ Foundation is working closely with the Atlanta based NeuroScience Foundation whose mission is to support research to accelerate treatments that significantly improve the lives of people suffering from devastating diseases, including Alzheimer’s Disease and Stroke. “We are honored to be chosen as a recipient of the day’s fundraising activities, and delighted to see the commitment of the National Senior League to support Alzheimer’s research,†said Susie Brown, Executive Director of the NeuroScience Foundation.
The National Senior Wii Bowling Day will target the 115,000 communities in the senior industry many of which have Wii bowling programs. Over the past three years of managing Wii bowling championships, the NSL has provided competition for Independent Senior Living Communities, CCRC’s, Assisted Living Communities, Nursing Homes, Rehab Centers, Senior Centers and Affordable Housing Communities. More than 225 communities and over 2,000 Wii bowlers have played in the NSL (www.nslgames.com).

Lots of suggestions offered. The only thing I can add is try to decorate the boards with a theme that could be use for 2 months in a row. The facility I worked at had 4 boards to decorate monthly. When you have to remove the calendars & all of the decorations, then re-decorate them & put the new monthly calendar up takes alot of time. Don't forget you still have to remove & put new calendars up in every residents room. Well this can take up almost your whole day & you haven't done any activities yet! So when decorating your boards try to keep this in mind.

These behaviors, and others equally challenging, impact quality of life for both caregiver and recipient. While there are pharmaceuticals targeted at decreasing these behaviors, their efficacy is questionable. Side effects are a major concern, especially in the elderly whose body systems may be frail or who are taking drugs for other medical problems. The use of non-pharmacologic interventions, such as behavioral approaches that evoke a relaxation response, are increasingly recommended by dementia experts for implementation in care facilities and at home.
Studies of alternative approaches to lessen dementia behaviors have trickled in over the years, gaining momentum during the past decade. In one of the more recent, involving use of therapeutic touch, Woods et al. (2005) point to review findings from the Quality Standards Subcommittee of the American Academy of Neurology which indicate that "non-pharmacological interventions showing the most consistency and promise involve sensory." In addition to massage/touch therapies, these include music, light, pet therapy, and video/audio tape of family.

Most of our resident's will not use this Urban Dictionary but it is fun & there will be a generation that will need it to talk to our kids one day. There are words in it that I think would make a fun activity that could lead to a discussion of slang words for your resident's generation.
Here is the link:
