  1. To add to this, does anyone know where to get some good sing-a-long cd's? I have elderson, but they are slow and a little boring. I'm looking for something a little peppy. Thanks
  2. Penny, I clicked on the link, and although it said new guidelines released, there was nothing else. Do we have to go to another section to pull the information up? Also, does any have Policies and Procedures for isolation activities? If so, would you be willing to share? Thanks, Stacy
  3. It's up to you how you want to plan it, but I do different activities on each floor. You can do the same, but you can run into the problem that you don't have enough supplies. If the residents get use to the activities on their floor, they may not want to go down since they don't like to ride the elevators anyway. My residents always migrate to the floor that has bingo. It's so funny watching them go from floor to floor asking where's bingo. Good luck in your new position!
  4. I have to admit, that's all I wanted to do this year, but the I thought the same thing about being lame, so I put together a Game Show Week. I'm still going out today to buy a Wheel of Fortune game. I contacted the school down the street, and they were thrilled to be a part of it, so they are putting together a Jeopardy game. It's not what I usually do, but the residents will still feel special. Of course we will have a bunch of food for them as well. Stacy
  5. I am unable to point to exactly to that regulation. I don't know how it is stated, but I do know that I will not go on an outing without a nursing staff present. We have 10 people that go on outings, and when I started outings, I made it known that they would not happen without it. We have since worked out a schedule, and I am given a CNA/restorative staff member once a week. I am however, debating on more "scenic" outings for our dementia residents, then I wouldn't be so worried about have a CNA present. Can you administrator give you the stating of the reg?
  6. The only thing that i have seen and read is that it will cover how to handle feeding assistants and fall & accident supervision. More is suppose to come out late summer.
  7. Can anyone share some goals for a comatose resident? Here's one, but I'm not sure about it: Problem/Need: At risk for sensory deprivation dure to comatose state. Goal: Will maintain curretn sensory stimulation daily. Approach: Use name frequently. Utilize Auditory stimulation. Key topics discussed to resident's former interest. Individula sensory stimulaiton visits. Thanks Stacy
  8. Is anyone a CDP? If so, does it benefit you? Is it easy to get the required CEU's? How do you market this credential? Just curious. Stacy
  9. That would usually mean black dress pant, nice top, maybe a blazer (ugghhh), blouse. It sounds like the khaki's and gym shoes are out. I would think to dress as if you were going for an interview or a business meeting. Good Luck!

    Health Fairs

I actually have to do one this year. It will be our first here at the facility, as well as my first in planning it. Can you give any other tips? We are planning it for Sept, and we want to make it a community event. I will check out your link and see how it can benefit us. Thanks Stacy
  11. lol...happy early birthday Chris! We'll be sure to have a big celebration! Stacy
  12. I've at my current position for 5 1/2 years. I finally have an awesome staff. It took a lot. I went through several Assistants before the ones I have now. Each one was always "the right one", then when the actually worked, it was a different story. Hang in there, you'll find her/him. Stacy
  13. Here's a Punch recicpe for Valentine's Day. I'm not sure where this came from, but it very well might have come from one of you. It's very good. Valentine's Day Fruit Punch INGREDIENTS: · 1 package cherry Kool-Aid · 1 package strawberry Kool-Aid · 2 cups sugar · 1 quart ginger ale · 3 quart water · 1 (6 ounce can) frozen orange juice · 1 (6 ounce can) frozen lemonade PREPARATION: Mix Kool-Aid, sugar and water. Add orange juice and lemonade. Mix until thawed. Add ginger ale just before serving. Serves about 25 servings Stacy

    Survey

As far as Activities, the looked at Care Plans and Progress Notes. They spent A LOT of time in our groups. A lot, just sitting there and watching. They did not question my CTRS status, nor did they look at my file or my Assistants files. They did look to make sure that the care plans were being followed through as far as approaches. Nursing had an approach that the a resident will be at the nurses station when alone, well, needless to say, she wasn't so that was a citation. I can't stress enough to only use approaches that will be followed through and not because they "sound good". Documentaiton was heavily looked into with all departments. I was asked to read several care plans and progress notes. I'm assuming whatever they were looking for was there, becuase they didn't comment on it. They were very into meal time tray passing. They got us for not opening up milk, however, I do not agree that one at all. They noticed on our dementia floor that milk wasn't opened and stated that we never asked the residents because the surveyor went up to the resident, and when she asked, the resident wanted it opened.....We all know that we can ask someone and they can change their mind, they didn't care. In fact, our sister facility got done with their survey yesterday (no feds), and the got cited for the same type of incident, in which they didn't open up their silverware. Resident dignity was a big issue with them, from finger nails, to knocking on doors. Fire preparedness - make sure your forgein language employees understand this really well, our laundry did know/understand. They asked a lot of our staff members about abuse and neglect, gave them situations, what would they do. We also had to do handwashing demonstrations for them as well The good news is that we are now down to 11 tags, but they still have not exited. Our admin, was talking with them telling them we want closure. They said they hope to be back next week...grrrr. I hope this helps, it covers many departments, not just activities, but like I said, they did have any issues with us. Oh, by the way.....there was plenty of drinking!!!! Stacy

    Survey

One word....Demoralized! Our survey is over, and they nailed anything and everything. I don't know how they do it in other states, but here, we are supposed to know after everyday the issues they have. There were at least 10 issues they cited us on that they never told us about. They even cited us on not having enough room in the dining room for all the residents to eat??????!!!!! Our building has been around for 25 years, and now all of a sudden we don't have enough room? We also don't understand, since the floor that they are talking about only 10 residents eat in their room, and that is by their own request. I'm the only department that did not get tagged, however, when it's that bad, I know I took some of those tags to heart. So, that is bitter sweet. We asked that they come back today, to talk about what they wrote, they did show up. This time without the feds. We'll have to wait and see what comes out of this. They also agreed to do a formal exit. This won't be done till Thursday or Friday. We know a lot of changes are coming, at least they will be for the good of the home. I'm glad it's over, I hope none of you have to go through a survey like we had to go through the past 2 weeks.

They are back in our building. We have no idea when they will leave. Two weeks of this is way too much. I'll update when they leave.

    Survey

Our survey is not over... This is the worst survey team we had ever had. This team has made some really bad acccusations, we have come back and refuted what they were saying. We have provided documentation (stuff that they should have found in the charts if only they would have looked hard enough). They said to us yesterday, that they are at a point that they should have been at day 2 instead of day 4. I will have to say that their list of their daily status meeting was significantly shorter yesterday than all the other days. I can't believe how much pressure they are under with the Feds looking right over their shoulder. We have even gotten them confused. A staff member was asked to go through the personel files with the surveyor to help her find what was needed. The surveyor got so frustrated that after the 6th file (there 14 she wanted to look at), she closed the files gave them back to her and said she didn't want to look at them anymore. I guess she wasn't making any sense. She wanted to know the exact date that a particular nurse took her exam, and proof that she passed. We kept giving her the liscence. She looked around at her team members, and they even said they didn't understand what she was asking for. So, we are on guarded standby, they said they will be back on Tuesday. Another week of this, how exciting... :hammer:

    Survey

What luck we have had... Our survey window opened up on January 15, and State walked in yesterday. Along with them, came the federal inspectors as well. We have 9 surveyors in our building, and it is sooooo intimidating. They came in at 9:00, and didn't leave until 5:00. We had 6 surveyors sitting in one of our activities. I went in to help the girls with the group, she was so nervous, and yes so was I. They are a very tight lipped group, and didn't say much to us yesterday at all. They looked at charts, and I know they looked at the activity section because I had to read to the surveyor the notes and care plans (one of my girls has bad hand writing) Well, needless to say, I can't wait till Friday. Hope your week is going better than mine. Stacy
  20. I was wondering if anyone has done a health fair at their facility? I'm in charge of planning our first one for the fall, and I'm looking for a starting point with this event. Does anyone have any suggestions, or do's and don'ts? What has worked for you? Thanks for you help. Stacy
  21. Right. I'm not saying we care plan everybody with a "problem", we also work on their strengths.
  22. I like to do a "chocolate" theme. The residents have a lot of fun with it. We do everything from the history of chocolate to them leaving with a chocolate rose.
  23. That's is what we are doing. The care plans still need to be interdisciplinary, but that every resident needs a care plan.
  24. We did the same thing last week. It was also a big hit. It made them think positive instead of always complaining.
  25. Hi all, I was if your facility has a resident handbook. If so, or even if you don't, can you share what you put down for the activity department. We are in the middle of developing one, and I was putting together a short paragraph, and found myself stuck in being creative. (Imagine that.... and AD that can't be creative... ) Any help would be appreciated. I have to hand in my section by Friday. Thanks Stacy
