msrenda 0 Report Share Posted November 20, 2007 Hi my name is Sandra and I live in Batesville, AR. I work for Health Resources of AR a mental health company. For the past 5 years I have worked with at-risk teens my offical job title is Client Service Specialist/Intervention Specialist. What I do is the same as any activity director, plan and schedule activities including prevention education. Next month I will be moving to the adult section and I'll be doing basically the same thing with adults with mental illness. I've worked in the past with special ed children of all ages including those with hearing and visual impairments. I've also worked with adults with learning disablitities when I lived in the UK. I'm looking forward to the much needed change and any ideas for activities would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
craftelady 0 Report Share Posted November 25, 2007 HI. My name is Melissa and I am an Activity Director of a 140bed longterm care home in Southeast Denver, Colorado. I am a board certified music therapist. Currently we have a census of around 90. 40% of our population is young residents (<60) with mental illness and psch. diagnosis . I am working to get these residents set up with lots of volunteer job opporotunities. We also have around 10% Hospice, 5% rehab and 35% longterm. As far as my typical activity calendar goes, I offer about 4-5 activities per day. We go on 1 outing per week, and usually have about 1 entertainer per week. I have 1 full time assistant, and 1 part time assistant that works weekends. I would love to have 1 more part time assistant to help cover some evenings. I need more ways to get families involved!! We offer monthly summer BBQs and Family Council meetings 1x/month, but still VERY little family involvement. How can I get more families to come visit their loved ones and participate in activities together? ie... the last family council meeting we only had 2 family members show up... OUT OF 90 some residents!

winkbub 0 Report Share Posted December 27, 2007 I would love to know who is out there and where they are from and what they do! I think it would be to be able to put a name with some info maybe even a picture! Hi, My name is J Kerner and I just found your organization on the internet. I deal with a number of Activity Directors in my business, and am looking for the best way to contact them nationwide. We produce and market a Classic Movie Matinee Series on DVD disks to Nursing Homes and Senior Housing Facilities. Each disk contains a classic cartoon, an episode of a 12 part serial, and then a classic movie from the 40's, 50's & 60's with stars like John Wayne, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Cary Grant, Abbot & Costello and thousands more. In between are old time intermision and other theater messages, making the whole presentation just like a Saterday Matinee from back in the day. The run time on each disk is between 2 and 3 hours. The cost is only $10 per disk including shipping and handling, with no obligation. Buy the first four to get started. The next month we'll send you four more. You can pay us for them, and we'll send you four more the next month. Or of course you can simply stop anytime. You keep paying us, we keep sending them. We have just been marketing this locally till now, but the response has been great! Everyplace that shows it tells me how much their residents enjoy it. We now have the capacity to ship anywhere in the U.S. and would look forward to your business. To order or to get more info, email me at winkbub@yahoo.com. Thanks J Kerner

I love working in SNF's and ALF's in any capacity. cwill21 0 Report Share Posted January 14, 2008 Hello everybody. My name is Chris and I live in Largo, Florida (its in the St. Pete area). I am currently enrolled in the first Activity Director Certification class and have been looking forward to joining this site for quite a while. I graduated from the University of Florida in the Spring of '05 with a Health Science Bachelor's degree in "Rehabilitative Services". The rehab. service I had planned on pursuing my entire school career was Occupational Therapy. After completing 3 semesters of a Practicum in Recreational Therapy, I changed my mind completely. I loved RT, interned 450 hours in the Practicum, and decided that was the field I wished to spend the rest of my life practicing. After college, I moved back home to St. Pete and half way through certification classes, found out RT was almost non-existant in Florida (medicare quit coverage). Although, I eventually was lucky enough to land a job in a nursing home as an Activities Asst. I have worked there 13 months and love every day of it. Almost 11 weeks ago, I started classes for Activity Director certification, and found out about this site. I look forward to interacting on this site as frequently as possible and getting to know others in the field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it would be to be able to put a name with some info maybe even a picture! Hello Everyone.... Nice to meet you all, also nice to know that no matter where we work....we all face the same problems. At this time of my life I am unemployed, due to a move from one State to another. I am having a difficult time. First I moved from the north..to the south. Pay wages I found out are not the same, regardless of one's qualification. I am nationally certified as an ADC. I was offered a job which paid $9.00 an hour as an Activity Director, in Bossier City, Louisiana. In North Dakota I was being paid $13.35 per hour...may be low to some of you but that is the facts of life. I do prefer the $13.35 in comparison to $9.00. Having 13 years experience and tons of CEU's, I want to be paid my worth. I love working with the elderly....my calling in life. For now because I am not working....if there is any of you out there that needs help in any assignments...or ideas...or rules and regulations. I am willing to help as much as I can. I figured that is the least I can do for those in our profession. emeraldcuteyes 0 Report Share Posted February 2, 2008 Hi y'all, I'm emeraldcuteyes, I am a Texas woman existing in Massachusetts. I stumbled across this site a while ago last year and I have to say I wish I would have had this kind support when I was an Activity Director. I held that position for 11 years, ending in 1990 when I returned to nursing. I didn't need to be certified at that time, just had to stay compliant with state regulations. The home was 120 residents and I had one assistant. We recruited a volunteer staff of 156 and we were the first home to sponsor the adopt a grandparent program in this state. The state surveyors loved my programming and would ask permission to photocopy ( that's what it was called then) all of my monthly calendars to pass out to other directors in the state. We had a full program 9 am to 7 pm Monday thru Friday and 9am to 4pm then 6pm to 9pm on Saturday. Sunday we had 3 different religious services going in the am and movie afternoon 2pm to 4pm. Our residents used to say they didn't have time for family. My assistant was a wonderful woman that became also my good friend. I never asked her to do something that I wouldn't do. We became the hosts for the yearly Red Cross and the American Heart Assoc. fund drives with the residents running the programs. I have to say I'm boggled with all of the requirements for Activity Directors positions. I'm also shocked with the salary quotes I'm hearing!!! I was very lucky, I was making $ 18.00 an hour in 1990. I always loved my job and put in long hours but always felt good when I finished a day. I have since returned to college again, a BS in theology and a Masters and PhD in metaphysical counseling.I am also an ordained minister. I have often thought of returning to an activity directorship yet I'm lost as to what I might need for requirements. I could only hope that in the future I can return to my beloved Texas to stay. If someone could give me the requirements of the majority of states it would be appreciated.Thankyou, emeraldcuteyes

chris62003 0 Report Share Posted February 4, 2008 Hi, my name is Christine and, like another post I saw, I too am currently unemployed due to a recent move. I am living in the Columbus, OH area. Received my AD certification in 1992 and have worked in LTC since that time. I have been sending resumes and have had a couple of interviews but no luck yet. I turn 50 this year. Has anyone else had a problem with prospective employers thinking you are to old to fullfill your duties as an AD? Especially if you are required to provide activities? I have never run into this problem but it seems to be a major factor in my job search. Hope to be employed soon and will continue to enjoy this site and offer what I can. Hi everyone!! BillinDayton 0 Report Share Posted February 5, 2008 (edited) Welcome Christine... I'm just down the road from you in Dayton and in my experience as a professional entertainer over the last twelve years, I'd say the average age of my clients (Activity Professionals) is between 45-55... Generally, I think this position requires or at the very least benefits from some real life experience. I've seen so many 20/30-somethings take positions and when I came back 2 months later to perform, they're already gone... Good luck... truebluejf 0 Report Share Posted February 11, 2008 I am an Program/Activities Coordinator at a county run Senior Center in Tennessee. We have a beautiful, very active facility and I am always looking for ideas for new games and activities. Currently, I am wondering if anyone has made their own version of the show Deal or No Deal? If so, could you please share the idea with me. I've been working on introducing some new games to the seniors. Our participation has been down on Fridays, so I've introduced FANTASTIC FRIDAYS. we had a Pictionary/Pizza Party last Friday and we had a blast. I was so pleased with the turnout and how many seniors wanted to draw for their team. The Friday before we made "No Sew" lap blankets and even the most skeptical, uncreative folks were thrilled with the results! This Friday, I've got a Bunco Bash planned. Of course Bingo is extremely popular, but I can only take bingo so many days a week, hee hee. Would love to hear from you all for more ideas. I am so glad to have found this site. Happy Valentine's to everyone!
