jj022004 0 Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 Hello everybody! My name is Jamie I am 25 from MI and I just started this past Monday as an activity director for AL. I am so unbelievably overwhelmed, I hope others have felt this way and can tell me that I will get better soon. I graduated in April with a BS in Communications. I have been married for a little over a year and am excited to start my new job, but I am stumped for ideas, any help would be so appreciated. Nice to meet you all!! Diana 0 Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 Hi Jamie! Welcome to the site! Glad you found us! Yes, being overwhelmed is all part of the job! Take it a day at a time and have fun getting to know your residents! When it comes to ideas, the best way to find them is to go directly to your residents and find out what they like. Once you really get to know them, your activity calendar will reflect their interests. Some fun ways to find out their interests in a group is to get them together, put them in a circle and play a get to know you game. Ask questions that reflect their past roles such as jobs, children, location (birth, raising family), religion, favorite colors, games, etc. You get the picture. Sometimes the group questions are more fun and a lot faster! You'll have to find out this info anyways for their assessments, which you really want to do with any new facility you work at! Once again, welcome to the site! Let us know how we can help!
happyroo 0 Report Share Posted August 5, 2005 Hi everyone My name is Melinda (Mel) and I live in Victoria Australia. I have been a volunteer at an aged care hostel for nearly 4 years now and am currently training to be an activities assistant. I may go on to become a fully fledged AD, or Diversional Therapists as they are known here in Aust. I have a pet peeve and that is the personal carers and other staff don't take DT seriously, and we get treated as a tea lady (and I hate tea!). Anyway, I'll stop ranting, I don't want to scare anyone.

klyn5 0 Report Share Posted October 10, 2005 I'm Kristi and I am the nurse and site mgr. for a social model adult day care. I've been with this small, private non-profit agency for 11 years. Skagit Adult Day Care (Skagit is pronounced "ska-jit") is in Burlington, Washington. I live 40 minutes away on Whidbey Island. I'm 42 years old, been in geriatrics for 25 years, 20 of that as an L.P.N. I have been married 19 years, no children but have a 13 year old Siberian Husky and a 15 year old miniature Dauchsund. Seems I take care of elders all the way around! ) I'm a non-denominational Christian woman who loves the Lord and my church family; I like singing, cross stitching, music, movies, Curves exercise, road trips, quad riding, and absolutely adore my nieces, all three of them, and they love me right back. How's that for getting to know me? )
autumnjaine 0 Report Share Posted October 18, 2005 Hi I am Amy and I live in Seattle. I am the Director of Activities at a 148 bed Skilled Nursing Facility. I have 1 Full Time Activity Director for our "Dementia Care Unit", 2 Full-time Assistants, and one assistant that works 32 hours a week. I feel very fortunate to have the staff that I do. My background is in Psychology (BA in Psych.). I am in the process of becoming ADC. We have alot of fun at our facility. We have many animals (2 cats, several bird cages--including cockatiels, parakeets & finches and a very special bunny--lots of fish too). The bunny is great for 1:1 visits! We take our residents out 4 x per month (2 breakfast outings, one mall & lunch outing and one "out to lunch bunch"). I am the only one on my staff who has my CDL--so I have to drive our big bus. I love the facility I am at--I feel that the pay & benefits are good--and I am generally happy in my job. I do get salary--however I work lots of OT--but it is by my choice-- I feel like I am really serving our residents and I am now recently seperated--and my family lives in TN!! I also don't have children so I am able to work the OT. Well, if you have any questions or comment feel free to ask! I have been in the feild a little over three years-- I also worked in Portland, OR as an Activity Director at an Assisted Living Facility. Both places have been large CCRCs & Non-profit----that is the way to go-- I have tried working at other places and have left--especially corporate--they don't pay as well and the environment is not as nice--that is just my experience though! rissa 0 Report Share Posted October 25, 2005 Hello all I am relieved to find that we all have similar pains but also share the joys of this profession. I am 27 yrs old, Activity Director in Oklahoma City OK, very new to the profession only been in it a year. I worked retail prior to that. We average about 120 residents all different levels of care and status. One question I have for you all is about culture change....have you heard about it are you in the process of doing it? Or do you have any idea about what I am talking about? I look forward to gleaning and sharing ideas about our programs.
Guest glorias seritsky Report Share Posted October 28, 2005 We have a 14 passenger bus, so we do not need a CDL. I have to orient any person who wishes to be a driver for us. We go out on the bus 2x/week during summer months (here in Minnesota, it's no fun to be out in the winter). 90% of our bus trips are just rides, getting out to see what's going on in the area. (Usually 45 minutes to an hour long ride.) We have many small communities w/in 15 miles of our facility, so we may travel to the local town just to say we went there. We sometimes stop & pick up Dilly Bars at the DQ. We usually don't get off the bus, as it is a lot of work for all involved to load/unload. BUT - we take a shopping trip to a nearby Wal Mart or mall about 1x/ month. We also have a casino in our community, so we go out there for a couple of hours, they also offer a cheap breakfast that we've been getting out there for. The problem is, more & more of my residents are too fragile to be out at the casino or shopping. Up until about a year ago, I had to turn residents away from a trip, cuz we were full, but now, I have to beg & plead to get 8 or 9 residents to go, even for a ride. We do have the capablilities to hold 4 wheelchairs, but again, it's getting to be such a challenge to get residents to go. 2 weeks ago, we post-poned a trip d/t lack of interest. I only had 2 residents that wanted to go! I need to have more than that to go out, especially w/ gas prices the way they are! Those that go, though really enjoy it!Stacie O. Hi I recently took the test and received a certificate for the advanced management Course. would like to get to know more people with the same degree. I have been doing the work of activity director wor a few years now because when our last AD left I feeled in then when we replaced her I am still doing alot of the work since the first Activity Director left . I would like to know is there an easy way to keep the CEU's and info together Gloria

sarahlovesav 0 Report Share Posted December 27, 2005 My name is Sarah, I am in my 20's. I became an Act Director first when I was only 16 years old & have been in the field often on ever since! I am the ACT Director of an assisted living community here in TN. I'd say we have about 40-50 AL resident's and 17 Dementia/Alzheimer residents. I do not have even ONE assistant and came into the job with NO volunteers!!! I am currently 6 1/2 months pregnant and my husband is going to school full time! So we are so busy:) However, I manage to put in about 50 hours a week - at least lately- I have been working days, nights AND weekends since there is only ONE me to spread around and I want to make sure each and every resident is happy!!!
