IRitch 0 Report Share Posted May 4, 2010 Hello all, My name is Irene Ritcher. I am not currently working as an activities director, but did in the past. I have to say that it was one of the most enjoyable and rewarding work experiences of my life. I have also worked with disabled adults of all ages. I especially (as I'm sure most of us do) love the expression of happy recognition on the face of one dealing with Alzheimer's. I am currently working as a writer, and have written a short story about one of my earlier experiences as an activities director. I would love to share it with you all, and will appreciate if you take a look. It is called The Bell. I think it will give you a laugh. Anyway, thanks in advance, and I hope you enjoy it. Happy activities everyone! http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2...ell.html?cat=12 I Ritcher BTW, I think "jello races" are great fun. Even those in wheelchairs, or with walkers may participate with some assistance.

I think all of us AD's probably have a funny story like yours at some point in our career. Being able to see the humor in the things we do as well as those our residents do is what makes us all good at our jobs & love it so darn much! Hi Irene: My name is Cathy and I can certainly understand what it is to be young, naive and full of energy. But even now I am old, naive and full of energy as well. I could tell you a story about when we had karoake. I was up in front singing with one of our nurses when she had to leave to take care of something. She gave me the other microphone. I honestly looked around for a second for someone else to sing with but when no one wanted to, not even the residents, I kept on singing along. One of our resident's who was 104 at the time looked to one of the aides and said 'save me!' she came and took the microphones from me and I have never sung since. But I am still in charge of the sing a longs!

Some of us do not have the best singing voice, but should sing anyway. After all, it is all joyful noise to God! Sing loud and proud my firend, it will encourage others to as well... I envy your energy. If you read my AC profile, you will see that I am 48, with four children ranging from 27 - 4 years old. If energy could be purchased I would likely single handedly make the stock quite valuable. Hahaha! Good Lord, my spell check will not cooperate, now my secret is revealed... NancyZM 1 Report Share Posted November 23, 2015 Hello Everyone! My name is Nancy and I'm currently a student in the MEPAP1 course. I work in a nursing home in PA and I enjoy my job very much. I am learning a LOT from the MEPAP course and I just hope I'll be a good activities' director when I take over the position although I know I'll miss my unit very much. I'm definitely always looking for new activities to engage our residents and I'm looking forward to checking this site out to find some new ideas. Just a brief look through this site has shown me how much information there is to access and utilize for my residents - thanks to everyone for your posts. JuneMaree 0 Report Share Posted May 20, 2016 My name is June-Maree and was an Independent Living Activity Director in another state. Since moving to Florida and working as an Activity Assistant, I decided to get certified as an Activity Director. I am finishing part one MEPAP and will be on to part two. I am also attempting to outreach and connect with a lot more people - in the profession and out. I've never been really great at networking but it seems to be more necessary since our recent move. This will be one of my beginning outlets.

sunshine001 0 Report Share Posted May 30, 2016 Hello everyone! My name is Sunshine Pitt! I am 21 years old and I have been working in my facility since I was just 18, right out of high school. I fell in love with the amazing work we do! My department has a Recreation Director an Assistant Recreation Director (Same qualifications as the AD), and 2 Recreation Aides normally. Our Assistant Rec Director got a promotion to a Recreation Director and I decided it was time for me to step up. Well I hit a road block, as I learned I had to become a certified AD in order to get the promotion. Currently, I am in the 13th of 16th week of the MEPAP1. As soon as I complete this course, I am onto the next one. Taking the MEPAP course is a great learning experience for me. Everything I have learned, I have brought to my job. I am open to any new ideas! I look forward to meeting and chatting with other activity professionals.
jaiken 0 Report Share Posted June 19, 2016 Hello Activity Professionals! I'm Jill, recently new to the healthcare industry and currently enrolled in the MEPAP1 course. I began my healthcare career as The Director of Admissions at another facility, and after (6) months, I became the Activities Director with over 100 residents. I am currently the Life Enrichment Director at a new skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation facility. There is nothing like working with our residents, getting to know and adore their families and loved ones. This is the most rewarding job I've ever had! sdufour 0 Report Share Posted May 20, 2017 Hello everyone! My name is Sia and I am a 25 year old Activities Coordinator from Toledo, OH. I have been working for almost 2 years in my AL facility and am finally taking the MEPAP1 course to try to become a certified AD. I am always wanting to become more confident in my position and even after 2 years I still feel as though I could do more or better. I want to feel comfortable interacting with my coworkers and do my best to provide the highest quality programs that I can for my residents. Right now I am struggling to find programs that cater to the small male population's needs. I am hoping this network will give me some ideas for all areas of my activities!
