ohiochrissy 0 Report Share Posted July 4, 2005 Hi, I am new to this site and to this career. I am Chrissy from Columbus, Ohio. I work in a 120 bed facility, which is corporate owned. I was a STNA for 11 years, then I got hurt at the facility and have been on light duty for 2 years as an activity assistant. I recently learned I may not be able to return to STNA work. So I am tring to become an activity director just in case. I know all the paper work and all that I ran the department until they found an AD. However, 70% of my residents are vent, and bed bound. All I hear from all the staff is no one gets enough activities, there is only the AD and Myself in the department, we get 200 dollars a month for all supplies. I have tried all kinds of stuff to raise money. We need a big screen tv in our dayroom, I have tried to get an extra room for a game room we have alot of younger residents now. Corporate and Administration say it's not in the budget. In need of help/ideas, I feel like I am failing my residents!
vrf13 0 Report Share Posted July 5, 2005 Hi -- my name is Valerie and I am an AD at a 200 room community. About 75% of our community is Independent & the remaining 25% is Assisted Living. The community where I work is located in the north suburban Chicago area. I have been working as an AD for about a year now & I love my job. Hate the paperwork & the budget parameters, just want to play all day with my seniors! How many of you AD's out there have your CDL? Do you ever have special outings for your AL residents?
StacieO 0 Report Share Posted July 5, 2005 We have a 14 passenger bus, so we do not need a CDL. I have to orient any person who wishes to be a driver for us. We go out on the bus 2x/week during summer months (here in Minnesota, it's no fun to be out in the winter). 90% of our bus trips are just rides, getting out to see what's going on in the area. (Usually 45 minutes to an hour long ride.) We have many small communities w/in 15 miles of our facility, so we may travel to the local town just to say we went there. We sometimes stop & pick up Dilly Bars at the DQ. We usually don't get off the bus, as it is a lot of work for all involved to load/unload. BUT - we take a shopping trip to a nearby Wal Mart or mall about 1x/ month. We also have a casino in our community, so we go out there for a couple of hours, they also offer a cheap breakfast that we've been getting out there for. The problem is, more & more of my residents are too fragile to be out at the casino or shopping. Up until about a year ago, I had to turn residents away from a trip, cuz we were full, but now, I have to beg & plead to get 8 or 9 residents to go, even for a ride. We do have the capablilities to hold 4 wheelchairs, but again, it's getting to be such a challenge to get residents to go. 2 weeks ago, we post-poned a trip d/t lack of interest. I only had 2 residents that wanted to go! I need to have more than that to go out, especially w/ gas prices the way they are! Those that go, though really enjoy it! Stacie O. Guest Guest_JudyLee Report Share Posted July 18, 2005 Hello to all out there! I am new to this, so bear with me. I have worked in the field of healthcare for the past 8 years. I am a Texas Certified Nurse Assistant and have also taken the Basic Activity Director's Training Course. I have worked as an Activity Director for several Assisted Living facilities and am considering taking the Advanced Activity Training Program to become fully certified. For approximately 4 yrs., I took on a private duty assignment as a nurse assistant. Due to my patient's passing, I am presently looking for a position as Activity Director or Activity Assistant. I would like to meet others in the field to help me get back in the network for job opportunities, fresh ideas, and relating experiences. I live in the Clear Lake area south of Houston, TX. Any information regarding CEU's or possible job openings would be greatly appreciated. I am anxious to meet new people in the field and become a part of the Activity Professional Network. Thank you & look forward to hearing from someone! JudyLee
douglash26 1 Report Share Posted July 19, 2005 My name is Heather and I live in Florida. I work in a 120 bed skilled nursing and long-term care facility. I started out as a CNA then I became an activity assistant and now I have been working as an activity director for over a year. I have a great budget compared to most places but don't get paid enough like most places. I only have one assistant who works full time but not full time for the activity department because she has to be a CNA and feeds in the dining room 2 hours a day. Of course I wish I had more money (budget and wage) and more help but we do everything we can with what we have. Plus I work with what is overall a great team...our family dinners/parties are huge and so much fun for the families and residents. Because I don't get paid great I work part-time for a Hallmark store. I just received my bachelor's degree in Health Services Administration last year and got no increase in pay from the nursing home...but now I am paying back student loans. There is so much that I wouldn't change about my situation...but the things I would change grate on me tremendously...for example not enough staffing, poor wages, and although we do a great job, the residents still suffer in my opinion. Plus, my lack of sleep during the week ruins my days off because I sleep in. We all have to love our jobs in some way to stick with it. Paperwork is important but I wish we didn't have so much. I live several hundreds of miles away from my family so my boyfriend, pets, and residents are my family on a daily basis. I am so thankful to have such an understanding man, and a team of coworkers who really care about the residents. Best of luck to everyone, I look forward to reading your ideas and implementing the ones that work for my residents. Heather D. Always remember it's about the residents!!!! Hnyb1998 0 Report Share Posted July 20, 2005 HI. My name is Melissa and I am an Activity Director of a 140bed longterm care home in Southeast Denver, Colorado. I am a board certified music therapist. Currently we have a census of around 90. 40% of our population is young residents (<60) with mental illness and psch. diagnosis . I am working to get these residents set up with lots of volunteer job opporotunities. We also have around 10% Hospice, 5% rehab and 35% longterm. As far as my typical activity calendar goes, I offer about 4-5 activities per day. We go on 1 outing per week, and usually have about 1 entertainer per week. I have 1 full time assistant, and 1 part time assistant that works weekends. I would love to have 1 more part time assistant to help cover some evenings. I need more ways to get families involved!! We offer monthly summer BBQs and Family Council meetings 1x/month, but still VERY little family involvement. How can I get more families to come visit their loved ones and participate in activities together? ie... the last family council meeting we only had 2 family members show up... OUT OF 90 some residents!
