Kerrie 0 Report Share Posted May 24, 2004 Hi. That sounds like fun, Gina. This is what I have in mind: an "evening by the campfire" theme. We'll serve s'mores, have someone playing the guitar or harmonica, have a tent and other camping gear as decor. What would be good to drink? Coffee or hot chocolate? I am looking for one of those patio fireplaces to buy, I think Target sells them. The Farmer's Almanac says we're to have "very warm" weather in mid-June, I guess we can always make the s'mores in the microwave if it rains (this is Western Oregon, after all. :-? ) and move the party indoors. Maybe I should make a fake fire just in case. I would love to hear any of your ideas. Thanks, Kerrie
Kerrie 0 Report Share Posted June 1, 2004 Hi. Here's an update on my Father's Day "Evening by the Campfire" idea: I called our state's Fire Marshall to see if there are any regs I should be aware of. He only said to write a policy and procedure after talking with our city's Fire Marshall "to ensure the safety of the residents". He didn't say I couldn't have a fire. I plan to use the bottom of one of those small kettle style BBQ's, take out the insides and use wood for the fire. I found a guy that plays country guitar music from the 20's & 30's (for free!). We are having this on June 25th, that'll give me time to get the p&p approved and the invitations out. I'm thinking that we can have evening campfires throughout the summer (unless there is a local ban on backyard burning during fire season) and include women residents at those future ones. Let me know your ideas! -Kerrie.
heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted June 1, 2004 That sounds like so much fun! Be sure to get some haybales for them to sit on! We are doing a father's day breakfast--nothing big. Just serving bagels with lox and coffee. Everyone seems to like it, and it fits in great with our budget. This will be our second year to do anything for Father's day--last year, we had entertainment and gave each man a small bottle of Vodka, which of course they loved, even though I had a lot of issues giving everyone alcohol and no alternatives for those that don't drink. But this year is much better.

AmberR 0 Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 Hello All! I just did a big mother's day tea party event that went wonderfully. Now I'm trying to plan something just as big for our gentlemen for Father's Day. I would love any creative suggestions or past events you have had. Thanks so much for any help
gina 2 Author Report Share Posted May 12, 2005 Hi Amber, Have you ever had a Fathers day Bbq? You could have a bbq and play old fashioned games like have a sack-race, a pie eating contest, horse shoes game, water balloon contest, even a scavenger hunt. I have always had an "Ol' time Father's day BBQ" every year and it has always been a hit! Decorate the patio/garden area in the red and white check picnic tablecloths and balloons.Serve hamburgers and hot dogs, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon etc. You could have a father/child picture contest, get old pictures of your resident and one of their sons/dtrs and glue onto a poster board and have your guests try to guess which child goes with which father.Give out prizes to the winners. I hope this helps. Have fun! Gina :-D
gina 2 Author Report Share Posted May 25, 2005 Hi All, Here is a fun game idea I ran across on a site called funattic. I thought it would be fun for Fathers Day. Dad Challenge Required: Clothes line, clothespins, phone, basket, clothes and baby doll Players: Small to large groups Hang a clothesline at the party scene, then hand each player a phone, a baby (doll of course), a basket of clothes and some clothe pins. The object of the game is to have each player hold the baby properly, while on the phone and hanging clothes. They must at all times be chatting on the phone and hold the baby as if it were real. See how many clothes they can hang on the line in 60 seconds, but the object of the game is to see if they can handle a mom’s job for 60 seconds without dropping the child or the phone. Good Luck and Enjoy! Dads of all ages and men in general are encouraged to play this game. Have all men, teenagers and especially, fathers give it a try. This is a great game for father/son outings. It is hilarious to see them juggle so hard to keep that baby in their arms.

Guest Guest_woorlynn Report Share Posted May 28, 2005 at my facility on Father's Day we are going to have a Family BBQ, its great for the activity budget because it will all come from Dietary I will post signs through out facility for family to be aware as well as sending invitations to them. We will also play games like horseshoes, sack race, tug o' war, etc.. This is ONLY for residents and family NOT staff, then I think Dietary will have a problem. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted June 7, 2005 I saw the cutiest bulletin board this weekend decorated by Gloria Orsak at the Hamptons Spring Shadows in Houstons. Around the calendar she stapled workers gloves with screwdrivers in them. Old ties, pieces of leather, and more it looked really good. I have such a hard time with bulletin boards. karen :-D

Hope 0 Report Share Posted May 30, 2007 Question: Since the idea is to make it a specific "Fathers' Day, focus on the men", event, is this for men (with or without their families,or for all? I'm asking because, with the high female to male ratio, leading to men reluctant to enjoy group activities (don't want to be with a bunch of women), if it's supposed to the about Fathers, or men, then it shouldnt' be for the women; however, the usuale core group of 4-6 women will always want to check it out, and how soon they forget the nice Mother's Day tea party with a flutist and pianist. When state wants to know what we do specific for men, how could we include the women and have it count by their standards? Or, conversely, since "everyone is welcome to attend all group activities, or it's not a group activity, how could they not be included, by state standards, which, of course will be a 3:1 female to male ratio attending the father's day event? Just wondering how you all handle these things. Women come to anything that's happening; men have to be interested to come.

I have found that if I schedule an activity for the ladies that coincides with the timing of my men's groups that I don't have any problems. We have had the occasional lady come into the men's group but they soon get bored with the conversation / activity and go on over to the lady's group. We also have the occasional man come visit the ladies group but the same thing usually happens. As far as state goes, we have to offer male-oriented activities but I don't think there is anything in there about excluding the ladies. Just my thoughts. I would love to hear what everyone else has to say about this issue.
Guest Tinki Report Share Posted May 31, 2007 This is my opinion not a fact - I think that you should never tell someone they are not welcomed in a activity. Now there are many ways to help you avoid having your busy women at your mens activities- like state above having other activities scheduled or even saying to a residents it a mens activity but you are welcomed to come. I am sure they won't. You may want to try to take the men out of the building next time. If your sweet ladies come in I would just welcome them with open arms. I would also talk to your administrator to see if there are any polices and procedures about this topic. If there are none in place you should write some - great way to cover your butt! OceanGuy23 2 Report Share Posted June 1, 2007 Hi all When I do men oriented activities there is always a different activity going on for the ladies at the same time in a different place. Our ladies like to have this time together for themselves and they do an activity and my men enjoy our time together. I would say it would be fine though if a lady joined us men or vice versa but usually they get busy with their designated activities. It is always wise to have a separate activity for the ladies when having men's time this way no one will get left out and everyone is happy. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted May 24, 2008 Kisses for Dad Materials : # Empty clean jar # Hershey's Hug & Kisses # 1 pair of socks & gloves (gardening or work) # # Hot Glue Gun or Thread & needle # colored paper, to copy the poem on # ribbon or thin rope Instructions : # Fill the jar with the hugs & kisses. Tack the socks together toe to toe using either Hot glue or by sewing. This will make a pair of arms. Tack one glove to the open end of each of the socks. Now you have arms & hands. Wrap the arms & hands around the jar a couple of times, crossing the hands at the front & tack together. Attach this poem, (or write a poem that is appropriate) using the ribbon or thin rope: # Daddy, If all these kisses aren't enough, There are two hands to help with garden stuff. If all these hugs don't work their charm, There are two arms to help keep you warm. If this gift doesn't show how much we care, We have REAL hugs & kisses to share! Jen 0 Report Share Posted May 28, 2008 These are all wonderful ideas. We are having our 2nd annual chicken dinner out in our therapy garden, but because of space constraints, we are asking the men to invite only one family member. Last year it rained & they had invited two family members & everyone was practical sitting on top of each other! I always do a "Mother's & Other's" honoring all the ladies weather they are mothers or not & the same for the men-a "Father's & Other's." That way, if they were not able to or chose not to have children, they're still included & made to feel special.[
