Miguel 4 Report Share Posted March 15, 2004 Hey all... My name is Miguel, I live in Southern California, Just moved here from Nothern Cali..(which I miss  ) I am a certified Activity Director currently working as an assistant. Have been in this field for about a year now and I know this is what god has sent me to do. Enjoy being a male working in a female dominated work force, (plus I can get alot of my female residents to do what nursing struggle with, just bat the eyes and tell them how beautiful they are.. WORKS FOR ME)I run the California Yahoo group and am hoping to increase communication in California between Directors. I look forward to working on this site with Pennie and helping this profession get the recognition it deserves.. :-D
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted March 15, 2004 Hi, Miguel Nice seeing someone posted on this Board. I was too shy to post anything but you broke the ice. My name is Patricia. Live on the East Coast of Florida, moved from the West Coast of Fl. Lived in Florida now for 16 years. Native New Yorker :-D Looking for a job right now as I had to quit my position as an AA. Currently enrolled on an online "school", Universialclass. com, taking Comprehensive Medical Terminology. Hoping that will "booster" my resume. They have lots of med classes there and I found it to be more then I expected for the price. Pat8231 8-)
gina 2 Report Share Posted March 15, 2004 Hi guys, My name is Gina and I am from California(born and raised). I am currently helping out on this site as a moderator. I am a Certified Activity Director and Certified Social Service Director, and I have been in the healthcare/Recreation field for over 19 years(since high school). When I started in this field there were very few Activity Directors around and certainly no ways to network with your peers.A few years back in 1993 I started my web site (Activity Ideas that work) on netscape.com(which is no longer)and recently moved it to Ivillage.com.I Love being an Activity Director!!!!!! My friends always wonder how I can work with "sick, old people", and I tell them they dont know what they are missing! I dont know what other job has as many rewarding moments as mine(besides being a mom of five, which i am). Anyways, enough about me,lets hear from some other members of the site.... AshleyHune 0 Report Share Posted March 16, 2004 Hey all, I'm an Activity Director in Sacramento, originally from Los Angeles but moved HERE from NYC. I am liking Sacramento! I am brand new to activities, been an AD for five months, but not new to assisted living. My first job in high school five years ago was in a home, and that was that! I love activities, I love my job, and I will be using any resource available because I am pretty clueless! I am also getting married in June and having a lot of fun planning that! Guest Beth W. Report Share Posted March 19, 2004 :-) Hello All! My name is Beth and I am the Alzheimers Coordinator for our assisted living Alz. community in Austin, Texas. I have been an AD for 20 years. I started off as a nurses aide when I was 15 during the summer and became a AD when I was 18. I have seen and heard a lot in my lifetime in this career and yet, I am still here. I have never done anything but work with the elderly in nursing homes and now assisted living and (I know it sounds so cliche) can't imagine doing anything else. Not that I don't have very frustrating and heartbreaking days, I do but it is always different, new and challenging. I am excited about the new message board and esp. the chat room. I am always looking for new friends with something we might have in common. Please feel free to use my email and visit with me!! I have two mottos I try to live by and encourage others to live by..."Tomorrow is another day.." and "Be Hi On Life"

Lynn56 0 Report Share Posted March 30, 2004 Hi I am Lynn and live in Indiana and want to get licensed/certified/trained in my state. I have worn my fingers out trying to find info on this in my state. Maybe my only option is to take an online course? or does my state allow this? I am not rolling in money so can't travel out of state to learn. However I already have a Bachelors in Education (which I think would be quite helpful). My state is laying off teachers and I want to do something else with my education. Also I have taken Medical Terminology and some other types of medical classes. I think this is right up my alley. I see lots of ads looking for activity directors or assistants but can find no information on how to train for this. I am hoping you have the information I need.
