I have advertised and interviewed some canidates but out of 50 resumes only 2 had expirence and I did feel a connection with either of these canidates as a fit for this community. Any suggestions as where I should look or advertise for the right person would be of great assistance to me! The position is full time and pays $26,000.00 a year to start. Thank you! All I hear from all the staff is no one gets enough activities, there is only the AD and Myself in the department, we get 200 dollars a month for all supplies. I have tried all kinds of stuff to raise money. We need a big screen tv in our dayroom, I have tried to get an extra room for a game room we have alot of younger residents now. Corporate and Administration say it's not in the budget. In need of help/ideas, I feel like I am failing my residents! We have a creative story writing group that gathers in our Dementia Wing. We have had excellent feedback from both the families and the staff. The program is based from a program called Time Slips you can look over it at www.timeslips.org It is something that you can do with little or no money. The only necessity is a good strong volunteer base whether it be families or local school kids. I hope this is something that wuld work out for you! Mary Ann 0 Report Share Posted August 4, 2007 Hi, I am new to being an activity director and am currently going to school in Florida to get my qualifications. I love the work, but never really knew how much the job required. I feel that I have finally found what my purpose is, as I love working with the elderly. I would love to hear from some of you who started this career, later in life. I am 56 years old and a retired federal manager. I have always been interested in health care and did a lot of volunteer pet therapy with the elderly. I am seeking advice on best resources, professional organizations, great internet sites that help with the job. So far, I have found that there are a lot of different ways that folks run an Activities Department. Hope there are some folks from Florida out there who will reply. This is a great way to communicate. Mary Ann

I'm kinda right plop in the middle, it'd be at least 4 hours driving time either north or south. And the closest local group is 2 hours away. We've been trying to start a little group here locally but it's hard because my company own 9 of the 14(or so) care centers and we meet quarterly. eightdozenroses 0 Report Share Posted August 29, 2007 (edited) I'm Rosemarie, and brand new to the field. I was an Eckerd Rx Store Manager (after spending 20 miserable years as an admin/marketing/PR) and I did enjoy my job, but when Rite-Aid bought out all the Eckerds, I knew my store would be closing so I sold wireless phones for a while. Great money - lousy job. I was despondent because, as a sales manager, I was told I was horrible at selling - my boss had no consideration for the socio-economic demographics of my area - these persons to whom I was supposed to sell were filthy rich and had cell phones; all I could do for them was upgrade or add a line for a teenager or something like that. After crying my eyes out one night, I decided to think about what I was actually GOOD at and what I LIKED. I liked my Rx customers - (my team won the Customer Service award EVERY MONTH except one when I was manager and that month we, er, "lost", there was CHEATING going on and the DM gave the trophy to her favorite manager), I LOVED working with my team (see my photo to see half my team; I'm the little one in the black holding the trophy for dear life) and creating games to teach them their jobs and how to excel at customer service; I loved visual merchandising (and was good at it) and I loved helping people. NUMBER ONE in the entire company for customer compliments. That's not shabby. Sorry to sound like I'm bragging, but it was my TEAM who did it, not me. We did it together. Trust me, I wasn't good at a LOT of things and I probably cheated on every stock count I did. Actually, I DID cheat. Working 70 plus hours per week on a very low salary, one cuts corners where one has to. Anyway, the next day, I saw an ad for an Activity Assistant on CareerBuilder. I didn't even know what an Activity Assistant did. I called after reading the job description and let me tell you, it was a HARD SELL. So maybe I am not really that bad at selling, because I talked the HR person into letting me have an interview. I got the job - and I really like it. I'm stressed, but in a different way than when I was running a $3M per year store. Well, that's me - I invite anyone who is new to email me and let's grow and learn together. I am an ad of a 103 apt. could go as high as 122. The problem that people don't understand is that when people are old and don't feel good they don't want to do alot of stuff. But here is what I do and cost nothing. I go to the library and get travelogues the guys really like them. They can be dvd or vcr tapes, they are usually 1hr long gives them something to do and remember. most anyone can play kings in a corner my group calls it a no brainer which means they don't have to do alot of thinking with it but they like it alot, bunco game. I have a 2:oo movie that I get a mixture of men and women because I play a varity. see if your library lends out free videos or ask your local movie rental for donating free older movies. I have some more idea but I hope this helps some. debi
