Just wondering what some of your plans are for summer activities and outings. Our facility is in a very small town with limited resources and limited transportation!

Would love to hear your ideas of summer activities.

Thanks,

Deana

Hopefully, we will stay as cool as possible! Although for the month of June, our trip will be taking walking tours of three of the universities in town. I planned them as early in the morning as possible, but it will be 90 degrees when we start the first tour! Unless of course, it is raining!

July we will probably go on the alligator swamp tour again. It sounds hot too, but we are moving on the boat most of the time and it is a wonderful experience.

Watermelon party for our independence day party-- everything else will hopefully be indoors-- and summers here are traditionally slow around here-- residents going to see their grandchildren or taking vacations, so *hopefully* I will get some work done and update all my files!

Hi Deanna,

I am new to this site and wow some great ideas are floating around here. For the summer we do fishing on a boat that is wheelchair accessible, we have the 4H groups come out to do petting zoos and we love to go to baseball games. By the way, I live in Southern Maryland so we have water all around us which is very helpful.

We are planning weekly picnics in our enabling garden. We have a pergola with a shade cloth that makes it much cooler in our sultry summers (Southern In.). Also, we like to do spur of the moment van outings to see the crops (we're in a rural area with lots of retired farmers), go to the big city (population 10,000) or into our little town for ice cream, etc. We also make homemade icecream, have popsicles at the drop of a hat on a hot afternoon, homemade lemonade. Anything that would bring back fond memories of long ago summers.

Our outings range anywhere from just getting on the bus to go for icecream to casino outings complete with buffet lunch. With the weather like it is we're doing alot of sitting on the porch in the afternoons. It's a great opportunity for reminiscing activities as well as short stories or just enjoying the breeze. Either way, you can't go wrong. Oh, and with fresh veggies coming in we also enjoy snapping beans on the front porch in the morning. Yee Haw

I am also in a facility that has a smaller budget and limited transportation. We are doing a number of on campus activities, but we will be leaving as well.

In the month of june we are having a strawberry festival. We are decorating our activity room with strawberry balloons and decor. We will be serving strawberry shortcake and we have ordered entertainment. We are also having a vacation bible school, lead by minister's in our town. Our residents will have a sermon, music, craft, and snack from 9-11am. They are very excited about this. We are also going fishing in oru campus lake. A lot of campuses are not as lucky to have this feature, but if you are you use it. You can make it more social by serving Tea and Lemonade to the ladies if they don't want to fish. Finally, we are taking some of our residents to the county fair. This is a big hit activity. It takes all day and a big number of staff, but they LOVE it.

I have planned a few outings on site and off site. This summer we will rent golf carts and ride them in the fourth of July parade. We also will do an outdoor "pool party", watermelon seed spitting contest, picnic in the park and a outdoor BBQ.

Have you considered a breakfast picnic? This activity was started in my AL before I came and the residents love it. The cost is low since the residents will eat what they would normally have for breakfast, just outside. You can have it on the grounds if transportation is an issue, or head out with your residents who are able to and go to a local picnic area or park, the best part is that the temps are not as hot early in the morning so the residents will be more comfortable, throw in a card or BINGO game after breakfast for an extra treat. Get your dietary manager on board. Many times they would love an excuse to get out of the building. Our dietary manager cooks up the food wraps it up to kepp it hot, then brings a hotplate to make fresh eggs.

  • 1 month later...

At the Adult Daycare facilty I intern at, we sometimes take our members for a walk. Just a couple of blocks nothing too long. There are some stores that we can walk to, but sometimes we have no destination and the members just love to take a walk!

Hi Deana! This is the first time I checked this site out! I have a feeling it'll be a great tool. I work in a 250 bed facility in Albany NY as the Activity Director. We do so many things over the summer...We have campfires in the back of out facility and roast hot dogs and marshmallows. We go to baseball games (the local AAA team - tickets are usually donated to us if we call ahead. Being in upstate New York we of course go to the Saratoga Race Track to bet on the horses! We hold outdoor picnics every Wednesday in July and invite families. We go fishing at a nearby lake. This month, we are having an old fashioned carnival in our courtyard with all the old games you know and love and of course clowns, cotton candy, and a fortune teller. We really rely on staff from all departments to create the games and run the booths. They love dressing up and enjoying the festivities. We recently did a balloon launch where we took as many resindets outside as we could and let 250 ballons go (one for each resident). Inside each balloon was a little note saying to call us of you find the balloon - if you're the farthest, you win $50.00 along with the resident who had the balloon. (We put each residents room # inside so as not to violate any HIPPA rules). If you do that you have to alert the airport! hope you can use some of these ideas!

Hi there! I am new to this site as well, but I can add some different ideas for summer outings as well. We just got a book called "Imagination Vacations" which is a close your eyes and listen type of activity in which residents imagine what you describe. This can be done anywhere, and is awesome! We also do bbq's weekly when possible, and cna's can eat if they bring their residents out as well (incentive!). Recently, we held a summer carnival in which everyone got straw cowboy hats, snack food prizes, authentic Hawaiian dancers entertained us, bbq, and residents were given water balloons to throw at staff! It was great! Shana

For the month of August, we will be having a Dog Day of Summer Social with watermelon and lemonade and a Luau. Do you have any local carnivals or fairs? Oh, we also go to the free Family Fun movies held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the theater about 15-20 minutes from the facility.
