 Mardi Gras Fun :)

Make Masks for your residents to wear, you can make them very fancy with simple stuff like beads, feathers, glitter, sequins, etc. Give each resident a plain cardboard mask that you can make or purchase and have them decorate them.

Make Mardi Gras Floats : Give each resident a cardboard shoe box and lots of goodies to

Decorate them with. Have your residents bring their floats to the Mardi Gras party and have the Administrator pick the Best Float .Give Mardi Gras Beads as prizes.

At the party play “Pass the baby”.The baby doll represents the traditional baby that is put in the center of the New Orleans Mardi Gras Kingcakes.

All the residents pass a doll around to Mardi Gras music (like the hot potato game) and who-ever has the baby when the music stops wins.

Serve Non Alcoholic Bloody Marys, Hurricanes and Mint Juleps.

For appetizers serve shrimps or crab cakes

We also used Yellow (stands for power), Green (stands for faith), and Purple (represents justice) felt, and decorated that for masks.

You can make kings cake. The simple wasy is to take cinnamon rolls and twist thim into a large oval. Cover the top with white icing and then sprinkle with sugar dyed purple, green and gold.

Mardi Gas Madness Punch

1 40 ounce bottle grape juice

1 48 ounce can unsweetened pineapple juice

1 2-liter bottle of lemon-lime soft drink

2 oranges or lemons

2 limes

(you can add vodka, but we don't)

Mix together

Decorations - You can get beads and party kits at the party store, balloons and streames, jester hats, crowns, large musical notes, Bourbon Street signs

Party Poppers

Empty toilet tissue rolls

purple, green , and gold tissue

purple, green and gold curling ribbon

tape

small gifts, candy, or treats to put inside the poppers

Cut a 12-inch square piece of tissue paper for each popper

Center the toilet tissue roll on the square.

Tape the edge of the tissue paper to the side of the toilet tissue roll.

Tightly roll the tube up in the tissue paper and secure with another piece of tape.

cut 2 pieces of 12-inch curling ribbon. Gather the tisssue paper on one side of the toilet tissue roll and tie with ribbon.

Fille the popper with the treats or candies . Then, gather the tissue on the open end of the toilet tissue roll and tie it with a ribbon.

Makes a fun party favor

Hi,

Well being from New Orleans I consider myself somewhat of an expert on mardi Gras. We begin the carnival season on King's Day (January 6), the 12th night after Jesus was born. We have a King Cake party. You can find receipes on how to make King Cake or on the web, Gamboino's is a favoriate and they will ship it to you. Whoever gets the baby out of the King Cake is pronounced our Queen. Now this part is a little rigged. We select a resident who needs a little extra attention and one who would like to particiapte then we give her the piece with the baby in it.

All month we center our activites on mardi Gras. We make mask, table decorations, banners, hats, mardi gras trivia etc. We have a mardi gras ball usually the friday before Fat Tuesday. We invite debutants and maids and the King from Thoth (a Mardi Gras Krewe in NOLA) The past queen passes down her crown and the King salutes her. Families get very involved too. We write a short Biography and have a brass band. It is one of our biggest events of the year and lots of fun!

Do not forget to put a baby in your cake so someone will find it. There is even a story behind the history of the cake to share with your residents. I am sure you can find teh history by doing a search or looking on nola.com.

Hi. I get my Dietitian envolved with us for any party or holiday festiveties. For Mardi Gras she has ordered what we need from our food suppliers. They have the King's Cake, purple & gold ice-cream, chicken nuggets, little sandwiches, virgin daquires and fun foods like that. I order all of my beads and decor from Oriental Trading, Inc. and I also keep my Christmas Tree up year round and decorate it for each holiday or season in which I have the residents make the decoration's for it. After Valentine's Day the residents will make masks, beads and other fun stuff to put on the tree. I hope this will help you. If you have any other question's just let me know if I can help.

We always have fun making masks for everyone to parade around in. We use felt, feathers, and sequence. We then do a parade the day of, in which, we decorate the wheelchairs and make shoebox floats. We get Jazz music. We make a mardi gras punch with, grape juice, pineapple juice and limes. We will also cook individual "kings" cake with cinnimon rolls and then they use purple, green and gold sugar with it.

In the past we have also had a "casino day". Played roulette, black jack, and dice games.

The residents have fun with it. They dress in the colors as well as the staff.

Hope this helps.

Last year we had a Parade. We made masks, decorated walkers and chairs and had a lot of fun. We alswo had a social with king cake (talked about the history) and beads and really hamed it up. This year we are doing all the usual but we have started doing "themed" dinner parties once a month or so...so we are doing a Mardi Gras Dinner Party with creol and cajun dishes. We will do a social, as well, with the king cake and hurricanes (real and mock). Mardi Gras has always been real big in my family and social circle so I always go all out with decorations and traditions.

We used to keep two christmas trees up in our Alzheimers Neighborhood that we decorated with each season. They were a big hit. They got taken down this year, I think by mistake, and put in storage....I kind of miss them. I think that is a fun idea.

When decorating the wheelchairs how did you do that. I don't want it to be a hazard and have the site manager, doctor and rehab department coming after me. Did you decorate the back handle bars, side of the chairs, and NOT the wheels??????

The residents that are in chairs need assistance, for the most part, so someone was always with them durring the short parade. Really the parade did not last long or go far...just around the hall in each "Neighborhood". Short stramers around the front of the walkers and on the "handle bars" and arms of the chairs....maybd some baloons on the ""Handle bars" and then the resident will have thier hands free to hold the masks.

We'll be inviting the residents to decorate their walkers and w/cs and throw beads in our in-house parade. I'm toying with the idea of inviting the head start and 1st-2nd graders to join us with their "floats" (decorated wagons). I'll have to make this decision like ..... NOW! LOL

We are embarking on a 10 day "cruise" that will begin on Mardi Gras and end on Valentine's Day. We will be stopping at various "ports" along the way with crafts, trivia and food related to that port. Our first on board event will be the Mardi Gras party. The residents will be working together in groups to create shoe box "floats" and will each create their own masks. Our event will end with the Valentine Party.
