Wilkesrose 0 Report Share Posted June 16, 2005 Hi, Tyson! Welcome to the board----I'm relatively new here myself. I'm very green to the world of Activities so finding this board (and a few others) has helped me every day since I found it. I look forward to reading your additions to the topic! phxville 0 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Hi Everyone, I am Janice and I am new not only to this board but to this profession too. I am having a blast jumping in with both feet! I am in Phoenixville. PA. I am wondering if there is anyone out there that is near me in vacinity, or in circumstance/experience?? If there is...let's encourage and help eachother!!! What other boards are out there?? This is the only one I know about, and I love it but I would like to know what else is out there too! It seems like I am having a hard time getting responses on here...Let me know! JANICE
gina 2 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Hi Guys! Welcome to the board and to the world of Activities! My name is Gina and I have been doing activities since 1984(I was 17 when I started).Right now I am not working as an Activity Director,I am taking a much needed hiatus for at least the next year or so and I am working on some books and raising my five children at home,my youngest is two. Anyway, now you know about me.I am interested in how you got your positions since you state that you are new to the field. Are you taking the basic state courses or what are your backgrounds? Just wondering because it seems like there are alot of facilities that hire people with no prior background in recreation and it is a hard, yet very rewarding job and with no prior background it might seem a bit overwelming with the paperwork, meetings, budgeting, implementing activities and such. Please let me know if I can help ya with anything or any questions you may have. And you can visit my Activity Chat site at: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Activ...yguid=178619319. Once again,Welcome and have fun! Gina :-)
phxville 0 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Hey Gina! Unfortunately I can not access your website at work but thanks so much for the response anyway! I am 23 years old, this is my first "real" job (after college) AND I have NO prior experience!! It is crazy. I was really overwhelmed at first but I think I am starting to get the swing of things around here. Although I did just read the forum about "how not to get a tag" from the state survey, and now I feel like I would totally FAIL everything. Most of the things that they said I need to know, I am no where near even having a clue about. Not to mention the fact that I am not certified, nor have I even taken any basic course!!!Ahhhhhhh...Haha. Good thing I am fairly easygoing or I might go crazy right now. Anyway, now that I have just poured out my whole life story, any pointers for me? I am open to hearing anything that will help me do my job better!! Thanks for the Encouragement, JANICE
Guest Tinki Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 I just have to say that this is my absolute favorite site! I get on it a million times a day! Dyransom 0 Report Share Posted July 24, 2005 Hi, I am DR and new to this profession and very, very green. I relocated from NY to GA and this is my first experience in this field. Previously I worked as an administrator in the school system. Any suggestions would be well received and appreciated. I am trying to understand all the initials i.e. "TR" and learn all I can. I work at an assisted living facility that has 30 residents. Most have dementia, I have received no training and the facility has just been acquired by a new management company that does everything different from the previous co. I am also trying to learn how to work posting to this board and all that is available on this website. My job is constantly in jeopardy and there is no support from administration nor staff at this time. I would like to know about the various certifications and educational opportunities for this field. I am hoping things will get better and that I will improve in my job. I love the residents. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted July 24, 2005 Hey Welcome, We are here to help! TR - is Therapeutic Recreation - it is a Bachelor's degree! What you need to do is get certified or at least take the Basic Activity Director's Course - go to www.nccap.org to get information. There are many people that teach this course on-line if you can't find a teacher in your area! Don't be afraid to ask questions - again we are here to help! Guest Tinki Report Share Posted July 25, 2005 Hey Alan, The shout box is really just to say hello, you never really get any responses. Regarding e-mail - I not sure who you are trying to reach. But you are doing the message board right! Do you have any questions I would be happy to help! Karen
StacieO 0 Report Share Posted July 25, 2005 Welcome to all those new DOA's!!! I'm a CTRS, w/ 10 years experience, at the same SNF. I finally, last week, had a nurse (that has been here longer than dirt) say to me, "well, you've been here for a while, what do you think?" ;-) I am starting to do some searching, though. I'm ready for a change, but d/t my location, rural Minnesota, I don't have a whole lot of options. Moving isn't one, my husband farms. Anyway, I'm looking into Massage Therapy. That would maybe be a perk to offer our residents, as well as a new outlet for myself. I do enjoy my residents, but feel like a change is needed in the future. Again, welcome! Guest Guest_simplyjessie Report Share Posted August 16, 2005 Hello everyone, Once again this is my second time introducing myself coz until now nobody respond to my request. I've been working as an AD for five yrs. already. Been dealing with D.D.; M.I.; ALZHEIMER,; HTN,; CA patients. I am a graduate of Bachelor Of Music in the Philippines that is why giving activities as what I've mentioned above is not hard for me. But since am in the field for quite a time now I just wanted to know where can I register for any seminar re: AD, I just want to broaden my knowledge and be updated of what's new. I live Los Angeles....so anybody from this site can help where and when will be the next schedule for a seminar or related to AD course. My email: musician20042001@yahoo.com Thanks and God Bless!!!
