mdntcrz 0 Report Share Posted July 31, 2010 Hello, I'm Trish and I just got things set up today on the forum.. am looking forward to sharing ideas with others who share my passion. A little about me, I picked up the reigns of AD in November of '09, I started out as an assistant SSD and completed the AD certification when I completed my SSD certification, so I am in the very rookie stages of being an AD. I am hopeful to gain knowlage and ideas from those of you that have been doing this for longer than I have. We are currently averaging between 75 and 80 residents at this time, I am the only activities staff (it has dwindled down from 2 full time and a part time). We have a mixture of ltc residents, short term stay rehab, and Alzheimer patients. I look forward to getting to know everyone and sharing Ideas... charlie 0 Report Share Posted August 6, 2010 Hello, Im Lisa and i have been in Activities for 12 years I love what i do but am always looking for new ideas. Hi Lisa. I run the Adult Day Program at our facility. We fold laundry(face clothes, hand towels), go out to the park for wiener roasts, sing, bake, paint, do exercise in their wheel chairs, we cook special meals for them. Meals that they pick. Hope this helps a bit and it is not what you do too!

I too am an health care aide plus an adult day assistant.. I enjoy my job very much. i'm the only staff also, I have 6-7 clients a day. My clients come in from the community. We picked them up in our facility van @ 9 a.m and return them home @ 3:30 p.m we have chapel, coffee, fold hand towels and face clothes, paint, bake, sing and much more.. I also look after the residents that come to the day room in our facility, some time there are about 45 others, if I'm lucky i will have 1 volunteer to help.. nice chatting. Take care. Anne24 0 Report Share Posted August 6, 2010 My name is Anne and since today is Lucille Ball's birthday we are having Lucille Ball trivia and quotes all day today. Of course I dressed up in costume as Lucille.Wig and all. I work in a 28 bed SNF that is attached to the main hospital so the residents here do not stay as long as an outside facility. We have major music one to two times a month. We also have a major celebration once a month besides the birthday month.

Trish Hi Trish, I want to commend you on your passion to do a good job as an activities director. We had a similar situation in my ALF, a staff member was thrown into the job without having any experience and our activities suffered. I work as a nurse in an ALF and it upset me greatly to see that my residents were not getting any stimulation and that their quality of life was less than satisfactory, I began spending my free time making worksheets for the activities director to use with the residents...I made a booklet called "finish the song" from my home computer.....I looked up songs from the past ( the AD would read the beginning words of the song and the residents would have to finish) ..later that day the AD came to me and said "they loved them!" She asked me for more...well, I compiled enough information to make 4 question and answer books with phrases, songs and more that we use almost daily and they love it. You can use them to unite all residents no matter what their cognitive level, even staff and family members enjoy them. My husband talked me into sharing them with other facilities. If you want to take a look at them go to www.memorystreets.com You can download a free sample to try for yourself. Also if you can get someone to play the piano, you can do name that tune....if not, you can use a Kazoo...it's silly but they like it. Something as simple as trying to keep a balloon in the air is a lot of fun ( put on some happy music and watch what happens) even the most challenged residents will usually participate. Good Luck. bucks2 0 Report Share Posted December 2, 2010 Hi Everyone My name is Michael, I am a personal care worker at a Age Care Facility and I have just started doing activities with 3 other girls, I am in the process of starting a mens shed for our 12 male residents, as they are split into 3 different wings in the facility, and only come together when we have Happy Hour on friday afternoons, or at other mixed activities like Birthdays. I have found lots of activities for the men from all of you liked minded people on this site (Thankyou) , so hopefully I can be of some help to you all in the future. Regards Mike. scastillo66 0 Report Share Posted December 2, 2010 Hi my name is Sindy and I am a newbie. I did do MEPAP I and passed so therefore I am here for MEPAP II. Today I just came back form attending a toastmasters meeting. I thought it was pretty neat how they do stuff like that. I didnt even know there was sucha thing. I l ike how they help you correct your speech grammar and pronounciations of words. They also teach you how to speak in front of an big audience. I was so nervous I wanted to pass out. I was so nervous and felt like fainting but thankfully God helped me survive. The subject was the nonsense lyrics on Christmas songs. It was funny because some of the songs really didnt make sense and the people who made the songs used words that rhymed to make it sound like it really did make sense. They even time your speeches! Mine ws 10 seconds which was the shortest they had today so it was pretty funny. I had a good time though!

Trish Hi Trish, I am a nurse who believes that activities are just as important as medicine for the well-being of our seniors. I made my own question and answer interactive activity books for my residents...they love them. The activity department uses them almost daily and I try and eek out as much time as I can to quiz them...they pack the room...I notice that even those who are standoffish and shy will stand or sit within earshot outside the room and shout out the answers. If you want... give me your fax number and I will send you a few pages to try with your residents for free. They really break the ice and help you bond with your residents... or you can go to my website to take a look. www.memorystreets.com
