Who Are You Activity Director?

Hello All,

My name is Emily and I just recently became an activity director. I love it although, I came into a pretty difficult situation at the facility I work at. Before, I became an AD I was a therapy tech. for a major corporation and every day of the week I was at different nursing home. My rotation consisted of five different homes so each day it was a new one and I enjoyed what I did. It gave me great insight to work at so many different homes and staff members. Although, all were owned by the same corporation they were very much different from one another. I got to see the whole spectrum from one side of the extreme to the other. Before I was a therapy tech. I was a preschool teacher and I really enjoyed working with kids. Once, I was a therapy tech, I learned about activity directiors and I had no idea there was such a job until that point. When I found out about it and when I felt comfortable enough working in a health care facility I pursued becoming an AD and I was lucky enough to get the postiton at one of the facilites I worked at. I was a tech. for a few years and while I was that is when I started to learn more about working in the healthcare field. Being an AD has similar aspects to being a teacher and I now know this is what I suppose to be doing. I love being an AD but, there are times or certain situations that can be extremely difficult but, I'm learning that one of the most important things for me to do is to always keep a postive attitude and outlook on things. It's one of the few variables we have control of and it has done wonders for me. It was hard coming into the facility after just being certified and I at times I felt like the staff and some of the residents were kind of testing me to see if I could handle it. It kind of felt like I was joining a sorority going through rush. I have been there now for 1-2 months and I'm really starting to feel more comfortable and I feel like the testing me/rushing me is finally coming to an end. You can probably tell that one of the things I am currently working on is teamwork because during that time I felt like a failure. I am also excited to go ahead and becume a member of the AD Network I have learned so much and I have found so much support from all the other AD's out there that it has been a true blessing and I can pretty much say if it weren't for this network I know I would be lost and feel alone when it comes to our job. To me ya'll and this network are like guardian angels and words can't describe how thankful I am to have such a great support system!!! So, Thank you to all!!!

Hi.. My name is Maggie and I have been an Activity Director for 7 years. My first facility was 145 beds with A TCU unit- I was there for 4 1/2 years and currently I am working at a facility that has 99 beds... only LTC.. Which I prefer.. less paperwork! I have been here for 2 1/2 years. My passion has been LTC... All of my childhood I would volunteer in Nursing homes... and during college I was hired on as a Act. assistant and feel in love with the profession. I am living in the central Valley of California...and am looking forward to getting to know other Activity Directors and sharing idea's:)

Hi!

My name is Alyssia and I just started my new position as an Assistant Manager/Activity Director (Yes.. they are combined titles!) and I absolutely LOVE it. I worked for two years as an Activity Assistant, which was my first job. I worked as a Home Health Aid on the side for a great company here in Flint, Michigan. We are an independant community (with assisted living options) We have aprrox. 100 residents in our community. I only have one problem... I am having a terrible time getting the residents to participate in any activities other than outings. I've tried getting the Red Hat Society moving, but there are only 6 members so far. I just need help in getting them to participate. If anybody has any ideas, I could use them. I feel as if I am running out of them! Thanks!

My name is Stacy. I am an Activity Director at a new Dementia Care Assisted Living center. We are about to open a 52 bed facility, in a few weeks. I have a year experiance with this present company, but I am about to start MEPAP I.I also have the asisted living manager's certification. I'm not real sure how that will come to play in the new facility. I really can't tell you much yet about the facility, as we aren't open just yet. But I have been told by the director, that I will get an assistant when census goes up. Yea.

I go into the new facility tomorrow to check things out, hopefully get started setting up the activity dept. Wish me luck as this is a new building, new families, new town. I am completely starting from scratch, including my volunteers, and entertainment. :hammer:

Hi, I just happened across this site and there are a lot of great resources and idea starters here. I am an Activity and Volunteer Coordinator for an Assisted Living community that also has a special neighborhood for people with memory impairments. It's a great place and we have about 85 residents total, but logistics are sort of a nightmare when compared to other places. We have three cottage-style buildings and each have relatively small common areas since it's set up like a homestyle environment. So there are positives and negatives. We don't have a lot of space for large groups, but it is a very cozy feel.

The main hurdle I am anxious to overcome as I am relatively new at this community (I've been there a little over a month now) is how to balance the activity calendar among three different buildings. I have noticed that in the past they would just set up major events in the middle building and make the residents from the other two come over from their neighborhoods to participate which has resulted in a lot of resentment from the two buildings on the fringe. So I've been setting up activities in each building, but as I only have one assistant for 15 hours a week and I am also responsible for driving the bus on three weekly outings it is impossible to be everywhere at once and the Care Managers are so busy with their own responsibilities that they are reluctant to lead any activities themselves. So I set up activities in all buildings and find myself running about all day trying to lead each thing which means I stay late all the time just trying to get the basic office work done. I have started in on trying to recruit a few volunteers since they have no regular volunteer program in place and I can't rely on Care Managers to take up some of the programming. It's somewhat difficult right now, as I plan for an activity to last an hour and then pad the time so I can get to the other building for the next thing, but afternoon socials are kind of a nightmare because they happen at 3PM in each building and the residents will not come out and socialize by themselves, it seems they have to be prompted and facilitated to do any activity by a staff member and there is no way I can be in all three buildings at 3PM every day, so this is leading to some frustration in the buildings where I am not able to go despite each day of the week my going into a different building each day for the social.

So I'm wondering if anyone else has a facility set up like this and how are they handling everything being small and spaced out and not enough staff or support to manage it all?

My Name Is April. I'm 27. I have been working at a nursing home in Pennsylvania for over 8 years now and have just been named the official activities director as of January 1st 2007. My facility has 250 beds . 100 which are personal care residents and 150 which are nursing care. I am responsible for 3 wings and maintain a staff of 20 activity Aides. I am still learning and am always open to new ideas. I am also always looking for new entertainment. The most important thing to me is the care and well being of the resident's in this facility and in any facility. Being "new" to the job I often have lots of questions and I am glad I found this site were I can bounce things off of other professionals such as myself. SO Hello everyone. And Chat with me anytime.

Hello! My name is Tami and I work in a 110 bed facility in Miles City Montana as an Activity Director. Miles City is a just a little community and so our nursing home shares a roof with a hospital and clinic.

I took a part time job here as a temporary Activities Assistant while I was a college student because I thought Activities would be the easiest cake-walk of a job. Ha! But here I am 9 years later as the director, loving my job, and I'll probably be here for a long time. I am fortunate to have a large department--I am full time, there are 3 part-time assistants, and 2 per-diem assistants. Oh, and I almost forgot my big old Golden Retriever also works here as a therapy pet.

Educational and networking opportunities are limited here in our rural area, so I am looking forward to finding new ideas from all of you!

Hi everyone. I am new to this site but I think this site is soooo awesome for activity professionals. Although I am not currently an activity director I will be certified by the end of this year. I currently work as an activities assistant in a long term care facility in California which I have worked at for five years. I am a twenty-three year old male who has worked in activities my whole working life. I know this is my passion, working with the elderly and I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. Everyday I go to work I know I am bringing joy to our residents lives. I love them so much and I love activities. I am so happy to be taking my activity course but I would also very much like to be nationally certified and I eventually would like to get a degree in Recreational Therapy. Right now I have an Associates Degree. I just wish there were more males who worked in activities but I know I am here and making a big difference in our residents lives. I love reading Creative Forecasting and never miss reading an issue. I would love to talk to all of you and feel free to email me anytime. I would like to know more about what is MEPAP and California Activity guidelines for certification. Talk to you all later.

HI. My name is Melissa and I am an Activity Director of a 140bed longterm care home in Southeast Denver, Colorado. I am a board certified music therapist.

Currently we have a census of around 90. 40% of our population is young residents (<60) with mental illness and psch. diagnosis . I am working to get these residents set up with lots of volunteer job opporotunities. We also have around 10% Hospice, 5% rehab and 35% longterm.

As far as my typical activity calendar goes, I offer about 4-5 activities per day. We go on 1 outing per week, and usually have about 1 entertainer per week. I have 1 full time assistant, and 1 part time assistant that works weekends. I would love to have 1 more part time assistant to help cover some evenings.

I need more ways to get families involved!! We offer monthly summer BBQs and Family Council meetings 1x/month, but still VERY little family involvement. How can I get more families to come visit their loved ones and participate in activities together? ie... the last family council meeting we only had 2 family members show up... OUT OF 90 some residents!

Hey Kevin!

Hope all is good with you, just read your post and its great to see younger men in the Activity Profession!

I think that younger activity professionals getting together to ensure the future of activity programming is important, I have encountered too many Activity Professionals who refuse to learn something new or "think outside of the box" and seeing that there is a future (you and me and others like us) is very heart warming. Keep doing what your doing, continue your education and show those who doubt you that they dont know what their talking about!

Keep in touch, all of us who care about activity reform in CAlifornia need to get together!

I may be in Visalia in OCtober to speak at the Annual NCCAC Conference, Maybe we can meet.

also.. visit the California Yahoo Group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CaliforniaAc...yProfessionals/

You have to be a member of yahoo!

Could really use your energy on the message board!
