HELP ME For us it depends on what we are going to do. Outings to the mall where we have a place to converge, we usually go at a 1:3 ratio, plus the driver if needed. Also families may meet us there. Picnics and lunch outings usually 1:4 with the driver not included. If we go to walmart or take a trip to the casino we are 1:1, and we gets lots of volunteers for the casino trips. Ella 0 Report Share Posted July 9, 2009 It all depends on the outing. If we are going shopping at Wal-Mart it is 1:1 so that the staff member can assist the resident with the shopping and pushing the cart/holding the shopping basket. We do utilize volunteers for shopping trips and if a resident needs to use the restroom while we are out, the volunteer finds a staff member and they switch residents for that time period. The same applies if we go to the casino. If we are going to a picnic at the park, or going on a bowling trip outing where we are in a confined area we don't need 1:1 and usually have 3 staff to 6-10 residents. For these outings our residents range from alert to moderately impaired cognitively. The residents that are severely impaired are taken on bus rides through the country so they can see the sights and get out in the fresh air. The bus rides only require two staff, the driver and one other staff to monitor the residents on the bus. We are required to take a cell phone on all of our outings and I wouldn't have it any other way! Hope this helps! Ella
eileen 0 Report Share Posted July 13, 2009 Hello, I am not sure either how many you are supposed to have. I know when we go on outings we always bring a CNA with us. I usually have around 9-12 Residents and it is me and my assistant with a CNA. I need to find this out too. Would be very helpful information. Good question. Anyone have an answer. yunakitty 2 Report Share Posted July 19, 2009 I only take AL residents that can get around by themselves, use the restroom by themselves, etc, on outings where we have to get off the bus. I have bad luck with staff cooperation and volunteers and though I do have family members occasionally "jump on the bus" at the last minute, I can never count on having any help so I limit it to the AL residents. I have about 10 residents on each outing of this type, just me and the driver, so the ratio is 1:5. Now, once a week, my assistant and the driver do scenic drives with all residents being invited, even the lowest functioning Skilled nursing residents as well as memory care. Like they say, even if you're the one driving the bus, I'd have a second staff member to make sure no one tries to stand up, etc. Nursing staff helps load and unload them, and the trip is kept to an hour or under to limit bathroom needs. There are usually about 12 residents and the two staff, so that's 1:6.
Jodiojodi 0 Report Share Posted July 21, 2009 For us it all depends on the type of outing. A bus ride/sight seeing type of trip of limited length can be done easily by a driver and another staff member, with C.N.A.'s etc. helping to load and unload. For most trips involving loading and unloading at a location other than our facility we usually go for a 1-1 ratio. We use family members, staff members, volunteers, etc. When you are moving around an area like Wal Mart, shopping malls, museums, etc. the residents really need that 1-1 attention. If we are going to be gone for more than an hour or two we take a Nurse, and usually a C.N.A. too to assist with taking to the bathroom. We live in a really rural area and most areas that would be of interest are at least 30 minutes away. Residents who have a family member or volunteer as an escort are assigned the buddy system with a staff member resident pair. That way there is always a staff member to make sure the residents are doing o.k. We take all kinds of residents but for the longer trips we limit it to residents who can be transferred to the toilet without a lift. And every staff member and some of the volunteers have their cell phones with each others numbers programmed in so that if you are not in the same area as the nurse, C.N.A., etc. you can reach them easily.
