We have a "safe trick or treat" where we invite residents, staff and community children to the facility in the evening(a couple of days before Halloween). We usually have a magician and serve refreshments and have the children go to the nurses station to get some treats. We hand out goody bags before they leave.

It depends. Since it is on a friday this year, you can either do it on the Saturday before, during the day works well.

Doing it on halloween, is kinda too much, if you're already having an activity for the seniors cuz they come first in most facilities-you know-paying customers.

We invite the children of staff members to visit on the 31st for a costume contest. They also pose for a picture and receive treats from residents stationed throughout the building. We have this going on for two hours. The residents then look at all the pictures, chose their favorite costumes in various categories. We then post the pictures on the bulletin with the winners highlighted for everyone to see the next morning. We live in a rural area so we also post the winners in the local newspaper. We have a great turn out every year. We also do a raffle for the employees who bring their children. One entry for each child they bring. This encourages more participation.

Does any one know a place that needs a volunteer this Halloween in Denver? I would enjoy helping out a facility somewhere. I guess I could start at my Great Grandmas. It just seems different for me when it's my family versus going for business. Sometimes it seems I can be more valuable to a stranger,,,,,I'll dress as a??? enjoy today! www.verycare.9f.com

We have a big party! Invite families, staff and children of both. Haunted House , candy at the nurses stations, games and yes even bobbing for apples (in foil pans), pumpkin decorating contest, and lots of creepy food.

We too have preschoolers come early in the week in costumes.

We dress up on the 31st but in "happy" costumes, no scary costumes. We did have a 90 year old pirate last year, who talked about until his death in the spring. It sometimes amazes me what is important and special to our participants and it motivates me to "go the extra mile" in planning activities.
