  1. I have had the same problem too Getting them to want to come is a challenge but once you have them commited and there it gets easy! Whenever I have a social that contains food (usually on Saturdays) i find it to be the most attended activity of the week... Once you have your residents there and happy and eating they won't want to leave... as long as you keep them busy! I also found if you ask them for their help they'll want to come and help you! i.e "I have so many letters to mail out today can you please help me put the stamps and labels on" or "For some reason all the markers have the wrong lid on, can you help me" or "Wow would you look at the time, it's almost lunch can you help me fold the napkins" When they feel needed they are couraged to help you... if you keep them busy they won't have a reason to want to go back to their room and hide
  2. Hello everyone! My name is Gaby Gonzalez and I am the activies director for an assisted living home in Fullerton,California. I hope all is well in your lives, I would like to ask you all to help me in a little project I am doing for my facility... I would like to start a postcard/letter table so are residents can write and read them during our Life stime stations.. If you could find it in your time to write to us that would be great and we would return the favor! I know my residents would appreciate reading how life is in an other part of the country... our address is: 317 N. Richman Ave. Fullerton CA, 92832 Thank you so much and please let me know if there is anything I can do for you!
  3. Very well said! I think if we do have a problem with an entertainer we should let them know what exactly it is and offer to help in any way especially since it is a volunteer! The AD who worked before scared away all of my volunteers and you have no idea how hard it was fro me to try to go out and reach them again! We need to have a good honest professional relationship with our volunteers if you need music you can email me your fax number and i can fax you some with lyrics and music! popeyeluv30@sbcglobal.net but please don't discourage volunteers I'm pretty sure that you have at least one resident happy with that voluteer! I wish you the best and good luck!
  4. for July you can have the theme be .... "America the Beautiful" and have Americas favorite and historical places on it or famous Americans like our founding fathers? "Fire works" lots and lots of pictures of Fire works? black and white and even paint them with glitter (those that are in black and white) Good Luck
  5. I agree with the person who commented after you if you have it on a regular basis like lets say the 3rd or 1st Saturday of the month families will know not to make plans that day and will make time available to come to your gatherings... and you have to keep on going *****one thing you might want to try is have family day with a comment/ suggestions/questions/concern box out with paper and pencils for families to fill out (helps with the shy ones or ones who are afraid to speak thinking you'll hold a grudge against them) and instead of having a whole hour be about business and speaking about problems in the beginning of every family day that you have pull out 2-3 comments/suggestions/questions/concerns and open the floor to anyone for the first 15-30 minutes then from there let the games and good times roll by having a performer and family activities that most can participate it to do and maybe even ice cream! That way they leave in a happy mood! But keep it consistent and you'll have more and more people coming as time goes by! And if you have a newsletter that you pass out let the families know what you went over and how much fun family day was and how you hope to see them there next time and that there comments/ suggestions/questions/concerns are always welcomed! even post some pictures so they can see all the fun they missed out on! Good Luck!
  6. I'm starting this new thing..... no more 1 hour birthday parties... instead its a BirthDAY celebration.... it has a theme to what the birthday lady or man likes... in example... one of my residents likes i miean LOVES Elvis so I am going to have that day be all about her & Elvis!!!! You can make the cake and have the residents decorate the cake! Birthday BINGO Pass the presents (like hot potato except no one is ever out... you wrap a present in newspaper after newspaper with foil and clear wrap and pass the wrapped present and when the music stops whoever has it tries to unwrap it when the music starts it goes on again) Pinatas are always fun and fun to make too! GOOD LUCK!
  7. I would be more then happy to help just let me know WHAT exactly it is you need... my email address is popeyeluv30@sbcglobal.net
  8. Where are you located at? California/Orange County area?! We would loe to own one but I was told the stat of California would not allow us to? Please corect me if I'm wrong?!
  9. oh wow I really liked your idea about the wedding station... I have something similar i call it "Home Sweet Home" instead of life stations but some things i do are... * I put a block of already sand down wood and let them sand paper it down and i bought some bird houses from the dollar tree that i'm going to put out so my residents can paint * I also use the sewing cards *I do coupon clipping and recipe filing * reading post cards and putting letters in envelopes opening mail * Floral arrangements
  10. hello there I have the same problem too... I have tennis rackets and have them sit (or stay in a wheel chair) in a circle and hit a balloon... I also do the whole music and dance.... I got shower curtain rings and tied ribbon on to them and they hold the ribbon rings and dance with them... since most can't get up they use to ribbons to dance and express themselves... if you cut out fishes out of construction paper then laminate them using clear packing tape you can then put magnets on them (x) and make fishing poles with sticks and strings putting a magnet (y) on them! and have the fishes float in a kiddie pool or fountain and the residents around the water trying to fish... and if they get a certain color they get a piece of candy or just an "Amazing Job" Spray Art... get spray bottles and put some water color paint or food coloring in the spray bottles... hang up some butcher paper and let them spray paint... you can even draw a mural before and let them spray color that ! I made sewing cards that worked well but from what you wrote I think it would be a bit challenging!

  12. What exactly do you mean by life stations?!?! Have you tried sewing cards... There easy to make and cheap! 1. color a coloring picture (you or a resident) 2. you can either cut it out or leave as is... 3. you can laminate it at kinkos (about $8 per card) or you can laminate it using that clear packing tape (88cents a roll) 4. Punch holes on the edges of the laminated coloring card 5. Cut a piece of yarn long enough to go through each hole the entire card 6. tie a knot or bow on one end and the other end dip it in glue or laminated it to make it look like a needle! It's easy to use and harmless...plus you can make it easy by spacing out the hole punches or harder by having them close together! folding clothes coupon clippings
  13. I'm starting this scrap book club and our residents cut paste decorate the pages/picture mayb eyou can do that with her... you can make a scrap book with her in memory of him! Good Luck and I'm Sorry to hear that!

    Wii

I believe the wii sports [baseball and tennis ] don't need you to hold that button... have them play that first and once they get the point of it slowly and patiently teach them how to hold the button, we have to understand that the wii is extremly new to them!... you can always buy Mario Kart which is simple & fun! good luck and keep us updated on how things work out!
  15. our guys here LOVE candy ... I have used candy for prizes and it works well... you can even get sugar free candy that looks the same as a regular one!
