I need help with pet visits. At the community I work for they require pet visits once weekly and I am hitting a brick wall. Things I have tried are...local humane society, family members or staff. are there any other suggestions.

I from Canada so I'm not sure if you have a chapter of this organization but what about St. John's Ambulance Therapy Dogs? They have a special section of their services that help train owner and dog to come into hospitals and seniors' homes etc.

If you call they will place a dog with your facility.

If this is not an organization in the States I am pretty sure they must have one that is very similar!

Karen,

A good resource is other facilities in your area, either hospitals, or other nursing homes or rest homes. Call their act. dir. and ask them who they use for pet therapy. If they don't have a pet coming in, call the animal shelter and ask if they know of any local organizations that go to facilities to visit the elderly or sick. In most towns, there is at least one organization that does this. Here in Wilson,NC there is an organization called "For the Love of Dogs." Hope this helps.

See if your city has a local DELTA Society - look them up on the web, it gives locations. They match up certified pets and owners with nursing facilities and hospitals. They are already trained, have name tags and insure that all pets involved have their shots and are tame animals.

My nursing home is owned by one of the hospitals in town, which happens to use pet therapy thats where our pets come from. I would see if the hospitals around you have pets. Plus we own a dog and a cat, they both live at the nursing home might want to see if you can go that way.
