Sand Activities

Does anyone use sand activities (e.g. sensory, beach reminiscence boxes etc.), if so how have you addressed infection control? Thanks

I would wash the people's hands before and after. If using sand change it periodically, not sure how dirty it really gets. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't infection control pertain to any sort of Reminisce basket, cart, whatever?? They all go from room to room with several handling those items. Washing the residents hands before contact should work!

Hi, thanks for replies. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of cross infection via the sand - is this likely to be a problem???

 

We are setting up a sensory hut in garden (i.e. with a variety of plants with different textures, colours and fragrances, also garden theme art works + more (is in progress) and I'm thinking that of a sand tray to run fingers through or one to place feet in could be a pleasant experience for some residents, but another staff member felt it would be a problem due to cross infection.

The only problem in terms of cross infection I see is with the feet. I help coordinate foot care for our residents so I've come to realize that many people out there suffer from fungus - which is not always visible, just creates that bad smell.

And it doesn't go away with washing, and takes agressive antibiotics to clear up.

 

But if hands were washed before and after - you can even double the washing of hands by using a alcohol gel too - why not!

With sand the only infection control you would need to worry about would be with animals present. If you have cats, keep them away from the sand. If you are worried beyond that, Purell on the cart.
