MrsCastello 0 Report Share Posted March 25, 2016 I am curious to know what your average census is, what type of activity staff you have, budget etc? I have been an AD since Aug, average census of 95, just me, and it's laughable to get help from CNAS or any or the nursing staff! I feel like I am herding cats 3-4 times a day when gathering residents for activities.
armywife8488 0 Report Share Posted March 29, 2016 My average census is 118-120. We basically stay a full house (120) all the time. I have three aides helping me and we have that same issue with the CNAs and the nurses not helping. I had that issue at my last place too. I believe that is an ongoing issue and will be forever. I cant imagine not having aides to help you though. Especially with a census of 95. How do you get everything done? I would talk to the unit managers and the DON about getting help from CNAs and nurses. We page overheard where I work and say staff please bring residents (wherever the activity is being held). Not that it works all the time, but most of the time it does.
Jud4me 0 Report Share Posted March 29, 2016 I feel the same way.... herding cats. only have 55-60 residents and CNA only bring people to the group activities when they want to get away from a resident that is having a bad and then leave them with me. We are in survey window at this time and are no longer allowed to use the intercom, we I have to go from room to room to get residents. No matter how many flyers or reminders are put out residents never remember and get upset if they miss something.
NinaJacobs 1 Report Share Posted April 9, 2016 I work in ILF and we have 120 residents give or take. It is just myself. I work 32 hours And I run around all day long from here to there....I do remind individual ones once in a while when they are new or I know they really wold benefit from an activity but they are hard to be motivated. Sometimes I get other residents to knock on their doors. I use the intercom, and flyers frequently but I also know that some just don;t read or listen and then feel left out. YOu need to have all staff to help and create exitement, which is difficult to achieve.
thilst 0 Report Share Posted April 11, 2016 I work in a nursing home with 45 beds, really small, and we are usually at about 42 people. It can be a struggle to get aids to help...especially with transfers for when we're running an activity that takes us out of the building. I try to develop good relationships with all of them in hopes that people will be more likely to help me.

With that how many activities do you do a day? How do you find time for MDS's and interviews? I am just an activity assistant currently but I help my AD with paperwork and between the two of us doing all of our activities it still gets crazy trying to do all the assessments. I am hoping to become an A.D within a few months so just trying to get some input.
kari 0 Report Share Posted May 20, 2016 I work in an Assisted Living Facility with Alzheimer's unit. We have about 110-120 residents total. It is the Activities Director and Assistants (116 hours per week) Total hours for Activities is 156 hours. You are going to get burned out and fast I would have a talk with your administrator to get some support. If that doesn't go well you should turn to the community. Churches, Schools, Colleges. People are always looking to volunteer. Good Luck. I hope you get the help you deserve.
berroa 0 Report Share Posted May 20, 2016 Hello, my name is Melinda. I work in a 200 bed SNF. I have a staff of 4 assistants, 3 full time and 1 part time. I am currently down 1 staff person and that leaves me running around like crazy. I just had 2 interns and 1 new volunteer this week so I should have some breathing room now. I am trying to get ideas for evening activities. How often do you do evening activities? How late is the last activity?

Like this week we did 3 nights. Tuesday was activity cart 1800-1840 and poker at 1900 til about 2000. Wednesday we did an evening cookout and concert starting at 1800. Then Friday Night starting at 1815 we played Keno, 1900 Poker. We mix it up per the residents request. But we always do poker at least once a week at 1900. Hope this helps you. sunshine001 0 Report Share Posted May 30, 2016 Hello I am Sunshine, and I work as a Recreation Aide at a SNF/LTC unit. We have an average census of 126. We are fully staffed as a Recreation Department when we have a Recreation Director, an Assistant Recreation Director, and 2 rec aides. I am trying to become an AD however, I know nothing of our budget other than it fluctuates with the census. We announce programs overhead and the nursing staff are good about helping customers (residents) to programs sometimes. A lot of times I do find CNAs encouraging their customers to attend programs and it helps.
awalden 1 Report Share Posted May 30, 2016 Hi, my name is Ashley and I work in a 54-bed health care unit of a retirement community. I am the only full-time activity staff. I have a part-time assistant who helps in the afternoons 4 days a week. We also have three part-time high school students who do evening activities daily and morning activities on the weekends. They work 4-8pm at night and 8-1:30 and 4-8pm on the weekends. I tried to make the evenings easier for the students because we were getting a lot of bingo and manicure nights over and over I gave them a "theme" for each night (monday is crafts, tuesday is white board games, wednesday "have a ball," etc.) and that has helped a lot. Our budget is a little over $500/month to cover materials, entertainment, etc. Hope that is helpful!
agoldenmom 0 Report Share Posted July 20, 2016 Wow, I thought I had it bad. I do not see how you manage. I am in a 120 bed facility. Most of the time census is around 90. I am the Acting Activities Director and I have two assistants. One full time and one part time. I still find it impossible to get everything done. Although I am doing well, I find it hard to get my assistants to do all the one on one visits that are needed. I stress to them how important it is but they still do not get it all done. I am too busy with my own work to jump in with them. I am considering ways to make time to do it myself since they don't seem to realize how important it is.
