midgey 0 Report Share Posted December 10, 2004 Hi all: I am an Act. Assist new on the job for 3 months, although I worked as AA in another state for 4 years. I'm having a problem with the movie selection we show. The AD has one certain resident pick the movies and the last one had very filthy language. Some residents left, and I'm sure others would have if they were able to voice their opinion. I was also offended by the movie but of course had to sit there with the res. When I talked to the AD about the situation, she said that it didn't happen often and I could get up once in a while and go out of the room. But what about the res.???? Any advice?? Thanks, midgey
mashonda 0 Report Share Posted December 10, 2004 A few questions before I try to answer. Is the resident going to the video store with the Director to choose the movie? Is the resident choosing the movies directly from the activity room movie selection? Is the same resident the one that always chooses the movie or does it alternate? I'll try to help without knowing this information. Let's see, it might be a bit of a challenge to ensure that all movie tastes are pleased. If the resident is going with someone to choose the movie, then the resident may have to be steered in a certain direction when choosing the movie or given some kind of guidelines. If the movies are centrally located in the activity office, then is it possible to only buy movies that have mild language to prevent the resident from choosing the one with foul language in it? It might also be helpful to have the residents change from time to time as far as what movie is chosen. Another suggestion: alternate the type of movie that is shown each week. For example, week one could be a western, week two-romance, week 3-action, week 4-musical, etc. I hope this helps some.
midgey 0 Author Report Share Posted December 11, 2004 Thanks for your reply Mashonda. I'll try to answer some of your questions. It is one certain resident and she gets her ideas for the movies from watching the "trailers" on TV then tells the AD who rents the movie from the video store. If the AD can't find that particular movie, then she rents what she wants to. I'm hoping the AD will let me have a little more say in this matter, since I'm the one watching the movie, too, then I will go to other residents for their input on the movies so everyone can enjoy. Once again, thanks. midgey
Stacy 0 Report Share Posted December 11, 2004 This topic should also be brought up in resident council. If the residents express their concern in the council meeting, then it has to be addressed. Maybe the residents can suggest movies for the month. The residents needs have to be addressed. If the director is not listening, then maybe the administrator needs to be made aware of what is happening. I would have to believe, that if someone else knew, this problem would not continue. Pennie 26 Report Share Posted December 12, 2004 Also the AD needs to be reminded that "New Movies" today are really offensive to the elders. Most women of the generation we deal with didn't curse, drink, smoke, talk about sex etc.. Men didn't curse in front of ladies either. This is not all res. but a hugh amount of them. Have any of the res. voice a concern to any of the family members. I would think that they would be very upset. Res Council would be a great place to cover this issue. But do u do this or does the AD? If the AD does then maybe speak w/ council president & see if s/he has heard any talk on the subject or suggest that they bring it up to the group. Another way is to speak w/ the administrator. Explain that you have spoken to the AD so that s/he knows you did not go over her head first. Explain the problem to him/her like you did to us. Ask him/her to not say anything to the AD about you coming to them, because you want any problems to occur from this. Suggest to the Admin. that s/he drop in during movie time. Another thing that could be done is tell the res. that movie may be to forward for most of the res. (they aren't all as hip as s/he is ;-) ) and that s/he could rent it & watch it in their own room w/ a few other res. of their choice if they wish. Make it like a special treat just for him/her. Maybe provide a snack & juice for them when they watch it in res. room. I know that it is a fine line for u since u are new to the job but hopefully it can be done in a way that it won't be blown up into a mess. Otherwise all u can do is sit back & wait for the res. to take matters in their own hands forcing the AD to do her job  Best of luck P
bigchris 1 Report Share Posted December 31, 2004 I used to show new movies, but found that they are not appropriate for the older generation. Now, our library has nothing newer than 1970. The residents seem to appreciate them more. Chris
cburleson 0 Report Share Posted January 7, 2005 One more thought - there are many resources online that can give you information about new movies - sexual content, language, violence, etc. All movies need to be screened in this way as to be sure to limit undesirable content. Good Luck!
