cindytexan 1 Report Share Posted September 10, 2010 I just went through a training course for Activities & social Services. We were told that all disciplins will have to do the resident interview with every resident for EVERY MDS. This includes an admission MDS, a medi-care 5day, 14 day, 30 day, 60 day, quarterly, annual, and sig change. If a resident goes out to the hospital on the 6th day of admission this starts over. We have 90 residents at this time, with 25 medicare. I'm the only Activity Director here. Does anyone else have any information on this? That's a lot of MDS's. When will there be time for Activities, One on One visits, and the documentation that already has to be done to satisfy the state surveyor's? So much for planning big parties. Anyone heard anything like this in thier training? (By the way we had 29 MDS's this week in my building. That's a lot of resident interviews in one week.) I have yet to attend a seminar but I know section F is excluded from the quarterly MDS forms. I was under the impression that our interview was only to be conducted upon admission and then re-interviewed annually.
LisaRee 0 Report Share Posted September 15, 2010 The seminar I attended was useless! It was a two day siminar and we were told to write questions down and they would answer the questions online. There was absolutely no conversations or examples...only a lady standing there reading directly from power point slides. I want to do the best job I can, but am confused at how to do it! *sigh*

I know the activities department is only anually and re-admssions. Section F is the activity section. There are several sections that could "trigger" the activities section if different approaches are done. Refer to section D- mood. Section N-medications will affect their participating in activities. Also refer to sections G1 and G3, section C 7-10, section B6. I am almst finished with the MEPAP 2 with Kathy Hughes and she let us know of some triggers that can affect the activities part of MDS 3.0. She said it is recommended to review the initial assesment first before you begin completing the MDS. Check with you local Activities Directors Association, they might be holding a seminar along this topic. Hopefully this will help you some. Kimmarie Kimmarie, I've been through traing from nursing at our cooperate office. What I'm looking for is a traing course from an Activity and Social Services point of view. Nursing has a way of training you to benifit nursing and could care less about my Activity Program. For example: We were told to have our Administrator buy a pair of amplified headphones for about 35.00 dollars to use during the interview process, and we would only need one pair. My Social Worker and myself believe if the Resident can hear & communicate with these headphnes, the facility had better provide them for every day communication. But that's not Nursings problem, it's our problem.

It is located at www.re-creativerescourses.com It was a CEU course worth 3 or 4 ceus. It cost $40.00 for one person to do and was worth it. I recommend you go to this site. She provides downloads of the notes and slides she presents and opens the floor to questions. I would also suggest that if you are not the social worker working as an activity staff person that you form a relationship with the social worker at your facility. Because what he or she checks in cognition and other areas may effect your section F. I found this webinar very useful since the facility i currently work for is focusing on the nurisng stuff, I found I needed to look for more specific training myself. Good luck all, speedy.

All we did was watch half of a YOU TUBE video on how to interview residents. We didn't actually get down to the nuts and bolts of section F of the MDS 3.0. I am pretty frustrated at this point and will probably end up doing a webinar to make sure I thoroughly understand what I am doing. In the meantime, I have a website that might be able to help you if you are interested. MDS Training Materials: http://www.cms.gov/NursingHomeQualityInits/45_NHQIMDS30TrainingMaterials.asp Also, the Dept of Health has a training video on YOUTUBE...maybe you can get more out of it than I did! Good Luck! Melissa

Went to a open discussion with the State Surveyor here in Florida, Paula Havrid, she went over the Mds 3.0... we had some questions she could not answer and will "get back to us" , however the way it was explained, the Act Section, F , is only required with the initial, an annual or a sig change........however the quartely notes will be reviewed for changes and revision and what the resident has been doing according to the care plan from the CAA and the assessment..........if the F section is all you are assigned............we too are looking at a crunch time, we are an 180 bed facility with a 40 bed medicare unit(transition)unit...........the way we understand it that we are facing 60+ residents who will require both a 2.0 and a 3.0 to capture the money within a 14 - 30 day span, not including new residents............ something that did come out of the "jam session" was that the Surveyors love the I care plans..............our team does too.. After MDS 3.0 training through Genesis, we were also told, Activities does not need to do quarterly MDS, 7, 14 or 21 day MDS. We do need to do a comprehensive activity progress note related to the care plan. It should be in the residnet's voice... I enjoy reading.... Hope this helps. We are all in the same boat.
