I would check with your boss first and explain to him/her about the finacial situation and if there is money that they could help out with for the celebration. Another idea is I would check with the local school band director and see if they could come and play. The other thing I would do is check with the staff at your facility and see if anyone has any CD's that are patriotic and play those during the day (if you do not have any). I know my residents enjoy singing to the music we play. You may have some staff that will come in and sing with the residents to the songs on the CD's. mcivella 0 Report Share Posted April 30, 2010 Contact a local car club or if you know anyone with classic cars you could have a car show in your parking lot. Maybe you could also contact your local police and fire dept to see if they offer any community outreaches or demonstrations.
Ella 0 Report Share Posted April 30, 2010 Do you have Activity Staff? If so, print up Certificates of Appreciation for your Veteran's. Get your patriotic music out, get your red, whiite and blue decorations out and have cake, ice cream and punch. Have everything ready for your staff since you cannot be there. Have a short "Memorial Day Ceremony" speech where your staff honors your Veteran's and then ends the ceremony by honoring all past present and future Veteran's. Decorate your activity area with your red, white and blue stuff and play the music in the background. If you are able invite your local VFW or DAV (Disabled American Veterans) to come to be guests at the ceremony. You will be amazed at how honored they will be to be asked to attend and it has been my experience that they also will ask to be part of the ceremony. Hope this helps! P.S. Remember to serve your guests first and ask them to stay to visit with your "Honored Veteran's"! Ella
ccrisanto 0 Report Share Posted May 8, 2010 Hi there! I am just beginning the MEPAP1 class and one of my assignments is to answer and help if I can. Well, here goes an idea: You have the ROTC coming in. Is this during lunch or dinner? If so, if you have some flags or ask the residents to make some decorations for the tables such as flags, and then ask some family members who may be coming in to help the residents get to the meal. Ask some of the dining services or if there is someone who works on the holiday that helps with you to oversee the activity for that day. I think if you can get a volunteer or two for that day that would be good. Then have the ROTC ceremony during the meal so everyone is in the dining room and have someone read a list of the veteran's residents and staff that are being honored that day. Hope that this helps. Lanorek 0 Report Share Posted May 10, 2010 If the budget is gone how about contacting a local church and see if a group of adults or possibly the youth group would like to come an assist for the afternoon. I grew up Baptist and we did this type of outings at least 3 or 4 times a year to have our youth get closer to the elderly folks. Maybe the ladies of the church could make cupcakes, cookies and punch which would be a way to get the entire church involved (depending on the size of the church.) Usually churches have youth choirs who sing and play musical instruments. Maybe they could provide your patriotic music or even if it is just accapella lead a resident group sing-a-long. Our residents just love to sing the "oldies" but "goodies." Have a project table with red, white and blue construction paper with tape and glue and let the youth group assist the residents in making flags. Then several groups could go out and place a flag on each door of a resident that served in any branch of the military as a "Thank You for Serving Our County." If you have music on your computer or MP3 player you can drop some songs in a flash drive and plug and play. You can also try to network with the local school for their band to play or maybe just a few band members to play some music. I love the Church idea. Getting the entire church involved sounds so exciting! Good Luck Tammy

Good Luck Tammy Another idea i had with the "open House" was to get the female residents a manicure and facial and hair done before the event to make them feel good about themselves and create more excitement. they can get all Dolled up and greet the guests to the open house of pass out pamphlets and stuff. Just an idea to pamper the ladies a bit. Tammy
