Resident Volunteers

We have some residents that are alert and oriented X3 and need something to do other than activities. I want to start a resident orientation program. Looking for some suggestions. What type of things do your residents volunteers do at your facilities? Did they fill out volunteer applications? Did you do orientation with them?

yes resident volunteers fill out a resident volunteer application, yes residents are provided orientation. also a doctors order must be available in the medical record for the resident volunteer to perform job duties . Some of the residents fold clothes in the laundry department. some operate our tiny store, others will put papers to be shredded into the shredder bin. stuff envelopes. apply return labels to envelopes. residents need to fill out volunteer application and agreement signiture to verify that resident understands that the following is on a volunteer basis and not a paid job.

make sure you also put in their careplan that the resident: "Participates in Activities with Purpose- without compensation". this way it keeps you out of trouble with the surveyors.

Some of the things my resident volunteers do are: set tables for meals, fold newsletters, and sweep walk ways. One gentle man is in charge of remebering residents birthday and getting staff to sing to them at breakfast and also taking a welcome gift to new residents.

Some things i have resident volunteers do: organize our book collection and label them, help call at bingo, assist another resident at bingo, pass out bingo prizes, shred documents, water indoor/patio plants, organize linen closets, read to residents, pass out mail.

Yes, all residents who serve as "volunteers" must have some form of volunteer documentation. While it does not need to be a formal application, it does need to have some information about "I serve at ABC Facility under no threat of coercion" or something like that...... each facility would be different.

 

 

Also, it will need to be Care Planned....there will be a section in the careplan forum on this soon, so be on the lookout.

I currently have 5 residents (4 women and 1 man) that volunteer doing crafts for one of the chapters of hospice. They do sign a contract informing them that those crafts they do go to hospice patients around town.I't gives them a sense of satisfaction knowing what they do is for a good cause.

Our resident volunteers hand out snacks, set tables, fold laundry, pass out clothing protectors before meals, they help prepare for large events, read at a local daycare, pass out bingo chips and cards, take the pets around to the bed bound patients, one resident sings to the other units entertainment style. Another resident even types thank yous to volunteers that I can print out and send. I hope these ideas help you. You do not need to orient them formally they can contribute to the life of the home without becoming a formal volunteer. Just make sure it is on a care plan that they enjoy helping out and the specific job they help with. Address it in your progress notes too. If they are helping with food or children take the necessary precautions and wash their hands. As I go along I am learning that the more residents are able to contribute the more successful and content they feel over all.

I just recently got a job in a nursing home working as an Activity Assistant but am taking classes to be certified as an Activity Director. But at our facility we have a few resident volunteers and they love it. We have one that helps out daily. He loves to help with pushing back the food trays to the kitchen. He will help others with activities and will push people in wheel chairs that need assistance to their room or other places. He has a badge from our facility with his name on it and states that he is a volunteer. Also, we have other volunteers that help with our Snack Shack. They add up the total amount of what the other residents own at the snack shack and the volunteers handle the money.
