Sara 0 Report Share Posted February 14, 2008 (edited) Fish are always good .... anything from small tanks (about a 10 gallon) to 50 or 100 gallon tanks. Come to think of it, I bet a pond w/ goldfish (they grow to fit their environment) or other fish would be fun. There's a snf in a nearby town that have a huge bird cage (larger than a highboy or hutch) filled with birds ... don't ask me what kind, I only recognize parakeets, and the like. There were no parakeets LOL. But boy, you'd have to have responsible staff to clean & feed regularly. I just remembered, we have a couple of "farm" type animals nearby that are therapy pets. One is miniature donkeys, the other are miniature horses. Alpacas are friendly too (look like llamas but soft hooves and don't spit like llamas do). Let me know. bigchris We've got a local 4H Group that comes with their pets, they brought cats, dogs, turtle, hampster, and some birds (I couldn't recognize what kind either). The hampster was a big hit... we let her run around in her little ball, I thought some residents would freak but they all couldn't wait for her to find her way to them. Let me know. bigchris We have dogs, cats, fish, and birds, in my facility. We also have the local State Park Ranger come in with stuffed wildlife animals. He sets them all up in our dining room and does a information type program for the residents. Its almost like we are actually in the woods! We also take our residents out to a local farm that exhibits safari animals and every fall we go to the petting zoo and apple orchard. We have other groups that come in with their pets to visit. The residents also enjoy sitting in the lobby and looking out our picture windows at the neighbors horses as well. VestaJade 0 Report Share Posted February 19, 2008 We have a large aviary from Living Designs in our lounge. It is great for small group & 1:1 visits, and for residents with dementia. Families love it, and many bring their loved one to the lounge when they visit. Activity staff clean it weekly (and prn), and it takes about 45 minutes. Daily, we check the water and food, and give them a hard boiled egg. It was a little expensive to set up, but it is worth it in the long run. The company comes to check the birds and do a thorough cleaning every three months.

The camel sat in our living room walked through the therapy room and sat there. The couple who own Kazzy visit facilities in our area. The residents loved it.
