SaHarris 0 Report Share Posted January 15, 2008 Good Afternoon, I was wondering if anyone knew where to get any information in reguards to the regulation to evening activities. I have 4 staff member other than myself, they seem to be very "set" in their ways from there old director. They have always offered activities from 9-8 m-f and 9-5 s-s. I am noticing though that the person who works nights seems to have nothing to do between hours or 5:30-7:00 until dinner is complete. I was just wondering if it was a regulation to have them all week long. The LTC I came from only offered it 2-3/weekly but had a heavy load during the day. I really feel that i am waisting a staff member by do this. Please any advice I want to be able to present something to my Administrator. turtle 0 Report Share Posted January 15, 2008 We only offer them 3-4 nights per week and have never had a problem with state. Tag F248 states "offers activities at hours convenient to residents (e.g. morning,afternoon, SOME evenings and weekends)" so a few nights a week should keep you in compliance. aRBeRec 0 Report Share Posted January 16, 2008 Well I think the regulations differ by state, but along the same lines as what Heather said... if they residents are attending and participating in evening programs then I would keep the evenings on. I have evening programs 7 days a week on my Dementia unit and 5 day for the high functioning residents. If I cancel on night they complain there's nothing to do at night, so it depends on your population. As for time wasted while resident are eating dinner, I assign whoever's working the evening tasks including updating attendance books, organizing supplies, etc. Also during dinner they can visit those residents on G-tube feedings, since those residents would't be in the dining rooms. imzoop 0 Report Share Posted January 19, 2008 The two hours between activity programs may be a good time to complete assigned progress notes, set up craft projects, clean and up keep of supplies and storage areas. It may be a good time to deliver independent activity supplies, or set up your therapeutic/relaxation, cd's for those residents with sleeping disorders or pain management issues. Lotion rubs, aroma therapy for those residents who go to bed after supper. Deliver books and magazines. Prepare library material returns for the next day. Clean and upkeep of pet supplies, bird cages, feeding dishes. Copy and replentish forms in their file folders. Set up supplies and forms for the next day. Make those phone calls to volunteers and family members. Fold, staple and address the newsletter. BillinDayton 0 Report Share Posted January 19, 2008 (edited) From the entertainment side of things, I like evening activities because if properly planned, staffed and communicated, they are great fun. Some facilities aren't really set up to do evening events like live music. Poor crowds, being asked to stop early, etc. make it not such a good idea. Sometimes the aids/nurses don't want evening activities because it interferes with med passes and bedtime... For those facilities that DO get support, they are very appealing. I am making an effort this year, for the first time to encourage Friday/Saturday evening events. Several places are jumping on these, others not so much. As the weekend club scene continues to erode in my market, I've decided to move away on my own from these places and try to add retirement communities on weekends where possible. I know it can be very frustrating if you feel that an employee is sitting around with nothing to do. You might, however, have a golden opportunity right under your nose. Where are the bottlenecks in your actiivty program? I mean, what are the things that slow you down or prevent you from having a fabulous activiy program as opposed to good program? Could your evening person help to open the bottlenecks? Can she go around during that time and sign people up for a trip? It will save time for day employees. Can your employee call entertainers for you? Or perhaps do research on the internet for programs and crafts. Are there "details" like having to make copies, etc. That she could do to free up your time? Or.....could you give her more responsibility and tell her to come up with a club or two and that it is her responsibility to run it, come up with ideas, book people etc. for those clubs? She could use that time for that too. Could she run to the store and get groceries or supplies for you for activities. Could she recruit volunteers during this time? How about using the time to talk to some Residents about their satisfaction with your program so you can keep your pulse on the population of your facility? Just some thoughts. We are always complaining that there is not enough time in our day to do everything. This is definitely a golden opportunity that I am sure many AD's wish they had! Good thinking! LindaMcLindedn 0 Report Share Posted April 23, 2008 At my facility we have a number of residents who are "tube feeders" and we have found that meal time is an excellent time to spend quality one to one time with them. In the summer season we take them outdoors, during other seasons we play games or whatever. People who are npo can feel left out when so many programs involve food. This may also help with friendship building between residents and staff... What a great opportunity for this to happen! I know it's hard to get out of your comfort zone as we all know. But it also allows us to grow in our own way. Have you tried suggestions or what each activity assistant can offer to the evening or how about maybe the nursing staff, stepping out of their box and providing acitivities with the residents in the evening. We know how hard this can be!!!!!! At the home i work for, this has been a struggle, but with guidance and perservance this can happen!!! We are still working with our evening staff to help and provide activities. This may also help with residents sleeping for the full night and not waking up hour after hour, because they are restless. Good Evening, One suggestion is for the person who works night they can help in the dining services by offering to fill juices and coffee to past the time. That is something new that was implemented at my community and it works well. Also at my community we only offer evening activities Monday-Friday and have never got in any trouble that I know of.
