Owldancer 0 Report Share Posted October 19, 2007 I need to buy Christmas gifts for my residents (assisted living). I have about 50 residents, some are wheelchair, most use walkers, hearing problems, very poor eyesight for many... Any suggestions as to what kind of gifts really work for residents. I don't want to get knick-knack stuff, and I don't want to get them something useless. Then again, I don't want to get something that is meaningless either! Help!! lllucas 0 Report Share Posted October 19, 2007 (edited) This is a list of Christmas gifts for Alzheimer's/Dementia residents. You will find that many of these gifts are also excellent for the entire population of your facility. Go to: http://www.theactivitydirectorsoffice.com/...iaGiftIdeas.pdf Hope this helps you. bigchris 1 Report Share Posted October 21, 2007 One of my slam dunk gifts are fleece throws that we get from Wal Mart or Garden Ridge (craft store) I think that they retail for about 10.00 but we talk them down to 3.00 or less. BC
Mel 0 Report Share Posted October 24, 2007 Ditto on Big Chris, really soft throws are always a big hit. Also soft fuzy soxs for the ladies usually go over well. Anything that feels good to the touch is always a big hit. I need to buy Christmas gifts for my residents (assisted living). turtle 0 Report Share Posted October 24, 2007 Last year we bought each of our residents a pouch to attach to their wheelchair, walker, etc. They were a big hit. Even those who ambulate independently enjoyed having a place to put their stuff. We also always purchase socks for everyone. For an additional gift, we always ask the residents for something that they might need or want. We have purchased things such as nightgowns, sweaters, cd's, books and sweatsuits. It makes shopping a little more time consuming when I have to shop specifically for 173 residents but it makes them feel special that we would take the extra time to make their gifts a little more personal. Fortunately, we have an excellant budget for Christmas gifts and are able to spend $10-20 per resident if needed.
Hope 0 Report Share Posted October 28, 2007 We have an adopt-a-Resident program. First, in October, we put the list out for Staff, after they adopt, our local Pamida store asks for a list as their "angel tree" is specifically for area nursing home residents. Of course, in those three months, the Residents will change, so the night before the Christmas party, I sort through and even out if someone gets very little and others have everything on the lists (instead of "choose from", as many times happens). Last year, we had 3 admissions the week of the party, so we did do some quick shopping. Also, I find something around $1 that is given out on their breakfast trays on Christmas morning-I have found great stuff at Oriental Trading and SS Worldwide; one year there were nylon bags that folded into a matching zippered coin purse with a sports ball printed on it; they loved those; Last year, I found some very pretty glass suncatchers; this year, I have found dry-erase boards with an animal border. The facility used to have calendars printed, but I find that families tend to like to buy them ones with pictures they like; as far as the dates, they have the activity calendar and it is printed larger. But, they didn't have the adopting program then, either.
