Guest Guest_Jill Report Share Posted October 18, 2006 Hi All, I am looking for a reliable workshop or seminar for senior exercise programs. Does anyone know of any? Thanks Jill jillybean1958@hotmail.com
Pennie 26 Report Share Posted October 18, 2006 Hi Jill, I know several AD's who do Tai Chi with their res. & they say that the res. love it. Have you tried to contact a fitness club in your area to see if they would come to the facility & do a program w/ your res? Many Church Excercise groups would love to hold an excercise session at your facility. Some fitness clubs have a senior day also I have a couple of links you can check out &maybe they will be help. Guest Guest_Jill Report Share Posted October 18, 2006 Hi Pennie, I was refering more for me as an instructor than for the residents. They seem to enjoy my workouts, but I get tired of doing the same thing. We have a nice mix of men and women and am afraid that if I make it too dancy that we will loose the men. I would really like to see some other routines that other facilities do and some ways to change but not loose participants. I would also like another professional to look at what I currently do to see if it needs something I am not currently doing. I am certified in senior fitness through SFA, but just thought it would be fun to have a weekend with other AD's or fitness instructors. Know of anything like that? Thanks for responding! bigchris 1 Report Share Posted October 19, 2006 I won't tell you where to download music because, I do not want to risk being one of the 8,000 people indicted by the FBI this year! But, I will tell you what we use for our low function and slower moving residents. For chair exercise, we use a lot of 50's and 60's that have a medium tempo beat, as we stress that every part of the body gets exercise, including the lungs and mout while singing! For slower movement, I actually use classical and new age like Enya. The different notes make for smooth transition. BC
Guest Guest_Jill Report Share Posted October 20, 2006 The music I use for my exercise class is called Swinging on a Gate by Tony Elman and it is folk music with no words to distract the participants. I ordered mine on line or there is an 800 number - 1-800-74-acorn. I've used this for years.
Jen 0 Report Share Posted October 21, 2006 I use all kinds of music so that the residents won't get bored, from sing to 50's to old country. Residents seem to really respond when I use Mitch Miller music. I think it might be the strong beat & the familiar words-sometimes they sing along while they exercise. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted December 10, 2006 Hello - I always had a hard time getting my AL people to go out, except for the Lunch Bunch! Here is a different exercise idea from www.members.activitydirector.com! Good Luck Karen Alphabet Streamers Description : -Great activity to add to your resident's fitness program. Materials : # Two streamers for each participant # Upbeat music # Audio player Instructions : # Play some fun and upbeat music and provide all residents with colorful streamers for each hand. # Start off drawing the letter 'A' in the air with the right arm and then with the left arm! Go through the entire alphabet to complete the physical fitness program.

KateAA 0 Report Share Posted January 12, 2007 You might try re-naming the class to a "Stretch Class" and integrating some Yoga techniques. Also some "new age" stuff like aromatherapy and some meditation. You could contact a Yoga Instructor to teach the staff and residents for a one time class. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted January 12, 2007 Hey AngelaKay, I loved Light and lively by Melody House, my residents loved it as well. I would try doing a program for participation - I used to do a DO YOU PARTICIPATE or ARE YOU HAVING FUN program. I created a posterboard with each residents name and put stamps everytime they came to an activity (do this with exercise only). Then either at the end of the week or month give a great prize to the one who participates the most. Then put info about the winner and the prize in the newsletter, make a big deal about it! Secondly - talk to the family members to see if they can do thier part in encouraging participation in exercise. I had a family member who wanted Mom to exercise so bad she would call her 10 minutes before each day (now that was in an AL facility). But in all facilities family encouragement can and will help some of the residents! Hope that helps! Karen
