Guest Stacie Report Share Posted January 18, 2005 Hi Pam... This week - we are having a "Winter Blues" party (our Auxiliary is helping sponsor this even). We've lined up a piano player to play all the old favorites that the residents know for a sing-a-long, we are having a surprise lunch provided by our kitchen (our dietary mgr loves this sort of stuff & usually has super ideas), our tables will be covered w/ blue table clothes, staff & residents have been encouraged to wear blue. It's really just a fun afternoon where we hope to shake those winter blues/blahs that we have here in Minnesota, especially after all the special functions that happen for the holidays, January is always quiet & can be dull if you don't watch out! Another fun January event that we've done here at our facility is outdoor games inside. We use a putting green for golf, in-door horseshoes, bean bag toss, beach ball toss, t-ball, etc. Then we serve lemonade or even popsicles. A few years ago we did a beach party in January, staff dressed in Hawiian shirts, served non-alcoholic daquiries and fruit salad, played beach music, tossed around the beach ball, & some brave staff did a hula-hoop contest for the residents to judge. Quite fun!

heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted April 6, 2005 In Houston, we don't really have a winter, so we do nothing with winter blues or snow--- but we are getting ready for the rodeo here. We have cowboy storytellers come in and do a show, country and western music with some haybales for decoration. You could have some line dancing or teach line dancing or have a square dance competition. Have a visiting petting zoo come along with cows, horses, and sheep. We have a Go Texan Day --- although I think it is in Early February, but everyone dresses in cowboy hats and boots. It is something different anyway. January also marks the beginning of new TV shows-- so you could have a TV party--- make a soap opera like they did in the movie 28 days, have a survivor contest with local high school and let the residents participate. Have an American Idol with a karoke machine (we use the grandchildren for this--- it is so cute to watch a 5 year old try to sing instead of someone who is old enough to "know better") Have the nurses and staff do a skit from ER or the Administrator do a skit with West Wing or even better, Jerry Springer! Have an Oprah Show where the Admin (who dresses up like her) gives everone in the audience 100 grand (candy bars that is). You could also go back in time and do old shows. SueJ 0 Report Share Posted November 15, 2005 Does anyone have any new and different ideas for N.Y.'s Eve party? I would like to change it to Noon Year's Eve but other than the food, what else???
hcornell 0 Report Share Posted November 16, 2005 Try a balloon drop & music, don't forget the pickled herring and champagne! Pick up those crowns from Burger King and have everyone decorate one and wear it at the party. You could have everybody write down their resolutions and New Year's wishes on squares of fabric, then hot glue some ribbons to the squares and tie them together to make a 2006 wish quilt. Of course there is always the idea of having everyone decorate their wheelchairs with real carnations, like the Rose Bowl. The bowl games are always on, great for your men. For the women, they may want to watch the parades, have a discussion about the floats and have them pick out their favorites. Noisemakers are always a hit, get a bunch of Kazoos from a dollar store and have your own Kazoo Band play what else? Auld Lang Sine! (I'm sure I spelled that wrong-sorry!) Whatever you do, have fun!!! Heide
Guest Guest_robin Report Share Posted November 17, 2005 at my facility every year I blow up(helium) balloons, after our party, we take all the residents outdoors , do the countdown, and release the balloons, the residents really love watching the balloons fly away, then we sing auld lang syne
DianeCDP 0 Report Share Posted November 18, 2005 We start our New Year's Eve party with a lunch at 12:00pm, followed by ringing in the new year in each country (all times through-out the day) Followed by everyone dressing up, and having a New Year's Eve Parade, we make our own floats out of tissue paper and card board boxes, and residents are invited to parade room to room in the facility wishing bedbound residents a happy new year, we bring a radio with us playing party music, and then we have a group activity in the recreation room about resolutions, we nominate a Mr and Mrs New Year to kick off the party with live entertainment, glow sticks, beads, etc. and then we toast with sparkling cidar is those cute plastic glasses ordered thorugh any party store. We hold a ringing in the new year bash and we use noise makers and sing auld lang we hold a movie for the late nighters, and tune the channels to the ball drop Don't forget to do a year in review, with all the headlines of the past yuear, the top stories, usualy you can find this on Cnn.com or a news website Have residents vote on what story was the biggest shocker, the worst disaster, the happiest ending etc. Type up a year in review to pass out to room bound residents and don't forget nominations for resident council president/ etc.! lllucas 0 Report Share Posted November 21, 2005 Hi, AD's! :-) In our facility the New Year's ball falls at 7:00 pm. We have a party, hang the ball from the ceiling, have some guest musicians, drink gingerale and celebrate the new year with party hats, favors and noise makers. Everyone gets to bed by 8:00 pm. Everybody is exhausted! As you all know...if we waited until midnight we would be celebrating alone. The Noon Year's Party sounds like a great idea. Although I'd probably reschedule it to 2:00 pm. I see no reason to do any less for that time than I would at the 7:00 party. Advantage: We can all get some rest before we party the night away! :pint: Have fun, Linda Lucas, AD ;-)
emilyg 0 Report Share Posted November 22, 2005 Here at our assisted living, we hire a piano player and have the party from 7-8pm. We have our countdown at 8pm. Before the party, our residents have a candlelight dinner. We turn down the lights and have candles. It's a real jazzy affair. We decorate the activity room with gold, silver and black. (balloons, confetti, etc) We dance with the residents and then countdown at 8pm. We have champagne in plastic flutes and yell "happy new year". Our residents really love it! Guest Tinki Report Share Posted December 23, 2005 Here is a good idea from our ActivityDirector.com site New Year's Resolution Bulletin Board Description : -Display residents New Years Resolutions. Instructions : 1. Interview each resident and ask them what their New Year's Resolutions (ask them if you can display their resolution). 2. Type or nicely handwrite each resolution and cut them out. 3. Creatively decorate a bulletin board with each residents New Year resolution and hang in the facility for all to see. Variation: You can use this as a staff motivation activitiy and make a bulletin board out of the staff resolutions for the up coming year! mariah 0 Report Share Posted January 13, 2009 One thing we have done at our facility for the month of January is make snow flakes. We used coffie filters and folded them four ways then cut out shapes. We hung them all around the activity room, it looks very nice. Even thou Christmas is over it's still winter. The next thing we are going to do is decorate cookies and have a hot chocolate and cookie party in our snow flake room. Teresa :-D Hi Everyone! Jeanine 0 Report Share Posted January 13, 2009 What we are going to do for Chinese New Year on the 26th is make paper dragons (go to www.crafts.kaboose.com) and look for Chinese New Year Crafts. Look for Dragons on parade. We will make the dragons and hang them from the ceiling. Also find the birth years of the residents and read to them the characteristics of that year (the year of the horse, etc). We will have fortune cookies and tea for snacks.
