  1. Well you might want to start by getting the nursing staff involved and getting permission to be at their staff meeting to encourage them to help get the residents up ready and to activities. Let the staff know that if they are getting the residents off of their halls its less work for them. they will not have to answer call lights, take people to the bathroom, or have falls. we pass out a daily paper every day to each resident that has the activities for the day and the menu for the day. the aides utilize this to ask the residents what they want to do for the day and what they want to eat. i have also seen families use this with their loved ones if they have a mild case of dementia. to help with not getting the activity done ask in resident council if the current activities are even what the residents want. go through the participation sheets to see what activities have alot of interest and which ones dont. for lower function we do alot of reminesce, sensory, 1:1, but most of our lower function still want to be with everyone else, they do more observing and more 1:1 with the activity for help. hope this gets you a good start. julia
  2. well first you need to go to nccap.org and find out what track you are on to get certified. if you need the mepap classes they are offered through activity directors network online. i was an assistant and am working to get my ad and i was also helping with mds, calendar etc. as the ad you will be in charge, have more meetings to attend depending on your building, the mds, calendar, care plans, charting, you will be the one that everyone goes to if they have a problem with your department, hiring and firing, planning the big events and getting them done, helping the other department heads, and the basic manager duties. talk to your administrator and see if they will help you get these classes to get your certification. hope this helps. julia
  3. After i create the calendar, I take it to fedex kinkos and get it enlarged for the bullentin board. we decorate the bullentin board every month. hope this helps
  4. When I started my job the AD was already gone but the calendar for the month was one. I started in the middle of the month so I decided not to start a new one. I met with the Administrator many times to ask her what she wanted. For example the night and weekends, activities is in the building from 8m-8p 7 days a week because we have the staff and thats what our administrator wants. I would just ask your administrator what they want and look up the state and fed regs
