Hi,

We are looking for new ideas for Christmas festivities at our home. In the past we invited families to an evening tea and had a children's choir perform. Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

Every year we have a buffet style dinner for families and residents (91 bed facility) with entertainment to follow. Dinner starts at 5:00 p.m. with live music at 6:30 p.m. The evening usually ends at 7:30 p.m. with clean up to follow. We have families R.S.V.P. so dietary knows how much food to order and generally charge each family member $4.00 - $5.00 per person to help off set the cost of the meal. We usually have some decorating theme for the facility. One year we decorated with a candy cane theme and one year snowmen. We usually have this dinner a week and a half before Christmas because many families go out of town for the holidays. This way they still get to spend time during the holidays with their resident, in a "holiday setting". Hope this helps!

We have the dinner and a show thing too. We also schedule a day for Santa to come, and staff and families bring the kids and have pictures taken. The residents like to watch this and sometimes pose as well.

Of course, just like everyone else, every church known to man comes out to sing and decorate trees for us.

We have also had the residents make gifts for each other in craft class. Each unit makes a small token gift and wraps it with home made paper and a card. They distribute them at a "pie and coffee social" the week before Christmas.

We have a holiday family party early in december on a weeknight around 6pm. All the department heads are required to attend! Dietary and activities work together to decide on an assortment of appetizers. We ask families to bring a dessert to share. Department heads help people get food and mingle with families. We have musical entertainment and Santa stops by to visit. Everyone has a blast and a lot of families attend. It is free for the families!

We have a party with Santa delivering presents for all residents, all donated for each resident by members of a local church. Families are invited, of course, and simple refreshments are served. We have a Christmas party for our volunteers and our residents have a program for them-bell choir, kitchen band, or sing. We also have a Christmas program with a Nativity and all parts and naration are played by residents. It's really special. Families and residents enjoy it.

We have several parties, most include the traditional foods and entertainment. I have 40 trees so it is a gala when we light them, so that is a good thing to celebrate as well.

Last year was my first year I was told in the past they had entertainers however last year I formed a Christmas choir with our own residents and they sang the traditional christmas songs (about 4 songs I think) we are planning to do that again this year they really enjoy being a part of what you are doing.

 How sad, our only Jewish Resident has decided she doesn't want to celebrate her holidays. So no more Jewish Holidays at my Catholic facility. That will keep our sisters happy. I do need ideas for what to do with my Muslim and Indian residents. I have two, and they do not respond, family is absent, but social services survey indicates a strong bond with faith and traditions. Can anyone help?

bump - here is some more Christmas

Here is a new idea that I will be doing for the first time this year as well. We are having a facility lighting. This is going to be really big. We have a huge facility and one side is a nursing home and the other is an assisted living. We are calling it It's Christmas Time. We will have it at the end of Novemebr to kick off the holiday season. We are lighting up the front entrance to both sides. We will also decorate the inside as well. You can also call some local churches in your community and get the youth choir or children's church to come out and sing at your facility during Christmas Time. Have a dinner for the families. Maybe before Christmas, because all families are not going to be in town for the holidays. When having your resident Christmas party, have some one come in dressed as Santa and pass out the gifts. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

An idea is we invited the residents loved ones to come for Cookies with Santa! We brought in the residents and they enjoyed the kids as they talk to Santa. Santa went around and asked the residents what was that one special thing they remember getting as a kid from Santa? That was very interesting and fun!

Enjoy,

Teresa
