Pennie 26 Report Share Posted August 2, 2005 Hi Did you get what you were needing on this? The formula is to take the time that the res. is awake for the day, don't count hours that s/he takes a nap if longer than 1 hr. Then take the time awake subtract the time in meals, doing adl's, therapy etc.. then from this you have his/her free time. How much of that free time is s/he involved in activites? You can take act. time divide into 1/3 for little, some, most. Figure all act. they do by the tim edoing it using formula above you get you're answer. Remember they don't have to be doing group act. or scheduled ones. The res. may read, watch tv, visit w/ others etc.. Anything they consider as recreation is to be counted as doing act. Hope this help out. P
Guest Guest_Gayle Report Share Posted August 3, 2005 I can not understand why on the MDS they have that question. Most Activity directors, nurses, non-residents (yes, including their families) don't feel they themselves have to be doing something whenever they are awake! Most of us enjoy a quiet moment to ourselves to think, sit and stare at space, etc. Our residents are usually much older, tirer easier and would like to be left to their our resources most of the time. I never triggered a resident on this as they are doing their own thing. I would think we should "TRIGGER" the staff if they did NOT transport residents to activities they ask to attend, or stop and speak to residents in the halls, or their room! Avtivities should be available but not recorded as to who attended. Residents let you know when they are bored and if we ask they usually will tell us what they want. Large events, entertainment should be provided on a regular basis oh and don't forget BINGO!! I never felt bad when residents didn't attend a "wonderful" activity I planned, I always figured I had planned that activity for the staff's convience, family's "peace of mind" that mom/dad were being entertained or my brainstorm that the residents would just LOVE the activity! Wouldn't YOU rather have a nice 1:1 visit and a cup of tea/lemonade or a special surprise brought to you with a friendly smile once in a while???? MWilsonADC 0 Report Share Posted August 28, 2005 I see good replies passed on to you! I will add that you should remember this is YOUR evaluation and it is YOU signing the MDS. When the MDS is reviewed by State workers YOU will be responsible for answering questions reguarding this section of the documentation and must be able to support your evaluation. Don't allow other disciplines to pressure you into rating residents into levels of activity involvement you can't support.
Vanessa 0 Report Share Posted August 29, 2005 We use a graph to determine average time in activities. It goes through time awake, time unavailable, and actual time in activities (group and individual). It is a great resource for when survey is here and asking questions! We put it right in the MDS and it becomes permanent record. The author has given permission for it to be copied as long as her credit remains on the sheet. If anyone would like me to fax a copy, please feel free to contact me at vfrank@EvergreenOshkosh.com.

bigchris 1 Report Share Posted August 1, 2007 Pennie answered the question well. I alwys tell folks that you divide the day between a few things. When they wake up plus when they sleep plus care hours (PT, OT, CNA, etc) plus time spent eating, sleeping, B&B minus a normal wide awake day. That will equal thier "potential" activity day. Then I subtract how much time is spent in activities both passive, active and independent and run a "percentage" of activity time spent. This impromptu "formula" has made explaining to surveyors how much time a resident is "active" it also gives them a hard number to look at. I know it may be crazy, but it has gotten me out of some jams. And after you do it 700 or so times, it gets easier. bigchris
OceanGuy23 2 Report Share Posted August 1, 2007 Hi all This might sound like a silly question but can anyone explain to me this fomula for dividing how much time residents are in activities because I am totally lost. I have read all the posts but I still do not get it so it would be really helpful if I could get some help in this area. Thanks.
