Hi. My name is Stephanie Prough.  I am nearing the end of the MEPAP 1 online course.  I am looking forward to becoming an activity director.  I am now working as an activity assistant in a dementia unit in a facility in Central Pennsylvania.  It is hard sometimes especially in the evenings.  I work from 12pm - 8pm so I deal with a lot of sundowning and anxiety later in the day.  I really like the work though and am excited by planning fun and meaningful activities for the residents whom I have grown to love.  I am concerned that being promoted to activity director will put me in a situation where I am behind a desk doing administrative things instead of being hands on with activities.  I hope that I can find a position that is a nice mix of both aspects of the job.  I haven't seen many positions opening up in my local area though so if anyone has job search tips, I would love some advice.

Hi Stephanie

Depending on the type of facility you work for will depend on how much paperwork will be involved. A Long Term Care Facility that is funded by CMS will require lots of paperwork & meetings. Usually a Adult Day Care or Assisted Living requires less paperwork so you could have the balance of what your wanting.

Hope this helps you. Good Luck

Hi Stephanie, I  am in the MEPAP I-100714. I work in long term care I was an activity assistant for 5 years. I am acting activity director right now but upon completion of this course I will be the activity director. I have already notice that I don't get to spend time with the residents like I use to I really miss that part of  my job. There is lots of paper work even though we have point click care  it is still very time consuming.

Hi Stephanie,

My name is Dawn Livesay. I am new to this site. Congratulations on nearing the end of your course.

I understand your concern in pushing paperwork and not having enough hands on time with your residents. This is the reason I am returning to Activities.

As an LVN, I'll come in a residents room to pass meds, and ask, "how are you today?" I barely get a chance to hear what they have to say before I need to move on to the next person in order to get all of my daily tasks done.

I have decided to return to Activities, so that I can have "time with my residents".

You will have more responsibilities, and it may seem overwhelming because it's a change from what you've been doing. Hopefully the Director you have been working under has given you guidance, and has increased you Activity Assistant responsibilities. If they haven't, maybe you can "volunteer" earlier in the day and spend some one on one time shadowing your director to get a better feel for the position. Go to stand-up, attend a CP meeting, help complete an annual assessment, MDS. Talk to them about triggered CP's and review some activity progress notes, etc.. to get a better feel.

I bet your going to be a wonderful director. They can only lock you in the closet if you let them, lol. Best of luck to you in the future.

Dawn
