mcivella 0 Report Share Posted May 14, 2010 Many of the residents I work with have requested a book club. We are having our first official meeting in June. Does anyone have recommendations for possible reading materials? I am also looking for ideas on how to run the group. i.e. Should we meet and read the book together or just meet for discussions? Ideas and suggestions from those with experience would be helpful.

I however, do not have many residents who would finish a book, so I am searching the internet for book reports and/or condensed versions which we would read together and discuss. I guess the format you use would depend on your residents. Most of my residents have not graduated High School, therefore this way may work best for them. pkc 0 Report Share Posted May 18, 2010 My book club didn't make it. We tried serval aproaches. The last one was everyone read their own book and report on. We were hoping that would open up new authors to others. We were going to try to give questions out at the start of the reading so the people could start to think about how they would answer them. If your going to read maybe do books on a CD/tape. That might help include those with reading issues or visual problems too. Would for sure start with a light hearted book and short. Maybe a Danille Steel. Hey on a side note maybe see if there is a movie version of the book. So after you read it you can talk about how the book compared to the movie. Might get someone not that into reading involved too. Going with that thought if you have big movie buffs maybe start a movie club like the book thing. Talking about the actors and writing. HOw would they have shot some of. Have a preview showing so the club could review it than show it again to all the residents after they hear their review of it. Suggestion to try some one act plays. That might be fun too. Good LUCK!

Good LUCK! i love this idea..of a movie club. even change it up to Lunch and a Movie. set it up so they can eat lunch and watch the movie at the same time.....i have done this before..and it has worked well...especialy if you have Large Projector type screen. also further to the book club idea. i know i dont have many who could do it the usual way. so i am going to adapt it aswell. and isn't that what is so great! we can adapt just about anything to suit the needs of our residents. i am thinking...even using book reviews.found on the net i am sure.....on past books they are familiar with...books they know. cheers Tilly

Those stories are very popular with the group and promote some great discussion and opportunities to reminisce. Be sure to pause every few paragraphs to prompt them with a discussion question to ensure they are paying attention and understanding the story. The Book we use right now is one that has famous people and their pets. The visual along with a short story seems to be just right for short attention spans. Book suggestions include: Little House on the Prairie Series, "The 5 people you meet in Heaven", and familiar classics like Tome Sawyer are all good. For those who can not retain week to week Paul Harvey's "the Rest of theStory" is familiar and gives you disscussion material.
