pkc 0 Report Share Posted March 1, 2010 April 22nd is earth day. So thought it might be a fun think to center a carnival type of event around. Was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this. Our community has an area around each persons porch that they can plant what they want. So was thinking of prizes of the plants. Was also thinking about getting them to join the Arbor Day Foundation to get free trees. Any other suggestions? THANKS!
heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted March 1, 2010 If you don't already, start a recycling program -- invite an environmental awareness group from the local college to come over and show the benefits. Also, you can show the movie earth or any of the planet earth DVD's Give away stuffed animals (endagered species) as prizes too.

Seedling flowers are always a fun activity to watch them grow from cups, but it will probably take at least 6-8 weeks to bloom and you'll miss Earth Day. Fablous 0 Report Share Posted March 31, 2010 In my faclity we are planting for the community. In this is a positive program that allows our guest to give back to their community one that they have been a part of for a lifetime. I have found places that are taking our seedlings and growing gardens to help feed the people in our comunnity. We were going to donate to our local food bank however we would have had to give names of particepants and this is a direct violation of HIPA. One of the places is a doctors office. It is cared for and whomever needs it can just help themselves. For earth day I have made a puzzle that ask them howmany times can you find the word earth. I am also having a Earthly Happy Hour. Tabletop Earth Day puzzles for the noon hour. We will Jazz it up with Live Jazz music just to catch earths beat and start the day off on and Earthly good note. I'm thinking of dressing up like a tree sprite or creature of some kind. A plant would be easy to do with daller stor vines. Your imagnation is the limit, let go and have a blast. Everyone has fun when you do. Oh Ya theres fun little movies like Groundhogs Day and Babe ect. Earth Day can include Mother Nature (costume) and her critters. What Fun! Now I'm getting carried away. hpt0413 0 Report Share Posted April 7, 2010 April is also "Keep America Beautiful Month". I am starting a recycling center here. We are going to decorate different buckets. One for cans, paper and plastics. We are also playing Earth Bingo and centering all the activies around the Earth Day theme. Maybe everyone could dress up for the carnival. andi12502 0 Report Share Posted April 8, 2010 Every 13 weeks we do a huge event centered around a theme. Two years a go we had large planters that had held plants in the past and had some dirt still in them. In order to have our residents in wheelchairs enjoy gardening we put them outside on our patio and solicitd donations from local businesses for dirt and plants. Our residents planned and then planted for a week with additional craft activities and spring music concert. At the end of the week they celebrated spring or Earth day with a huge party on Friday complete with refreshments and music. This year they are so excited about the handicapped accessible garden that they will be selling the herbs and vegetables at a farm stand. This is also a great vocational opportunity for them on an ongoing basis.
ceciliacurtis 0 Report Share Posted April 10, 2010 tHOSE ARE GREAT IDEAS. I HAVE CALLED THE NEARBY NURSERYS AND ASKED THEM TO DONATE SMALL TREES AND OR PLANTS FOR THE RESIDENTS TO PLANT. THE RESIDENTS SELECT WHERE TO PLANT THE TREE OR TREES IT DEPENDS HOW GENEROUS THEY ARE WITH DONATIONS. AND OF COURSE DURING THE WEEK WE DISCUSS AND HAVE HISTORY OF EARTH DAY AND TRIVIA. AND OF COURSE REFRESHMENTS AFTER WE PLANT THE TREES. THEN AFTERWARDS IT ADDS AN ACTIVITY FOR WATERING AND UPKEEP OF PLANTS AND THE TREES. MOST OF THEM HAVE GREEN THUMBS SO THAT IS WHAT I CALL THE ACTIVITY AFTER THAT DAY. i TOO HAVE USED THE CREATIVE FORCAST, EVEN THE OLD ONES ARE STILL GREAT! April 22nd is earth day. So thought it might be a fun think to center a carnival type of event around. Was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this. We asked staff to donate cereal boxes. (We got tons of them) Then we cut the boxes into the shape of magazine holders. We spray painted the boxes either gold or silver. The original writting still showed through but this just added interest to the boxes. The residents then decorated the boxes any way they wanted (with stickers, markers, paint...). It was very popular and the Resident have asked for more projects like this. Pat Kiely
