new group activity ideas

We usually like to include a lot of the other departments to lead some group activities. For example we have a nutrition presentation once a month led by our dieticians and a live cooking show once a month led by two of our chefs.

We have a "Food Committee" for our residents once a month but it is mostly just complaining about the food. I think I might use your presentation and cooking show to give the kitchen staff and residents a better realtionship. That was a great idea, thank you.

We also do the same thing (we are independent living) :

Our nurse does memory workshops and aromatherapy classes,

Our social worker does grief groups, medicare information,

Our administrator does complaint groups-- residents come to her to complain about how everything is running- and how to improve things.

Our maintenance department does videos of what to do and what not to do dealing with trash rooms, etc.- it is shown at the Residents' Council meeting.

I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Kimberley and BRAND NEW Activities Director. I was a Direct Care Provider for only a few months before the Director and administrator came to me and offered this position to me with complete confidence I can do the job and excel in it. So for that I am grateful they have the confidence in me. I am very excited. I have a passion for this and for the clients.

This is a small business with 14 clients with all type of mental and physical disabilities. Which means I will be coordinating all activities, volunteer, outings, crafts, projects, and also in charge of fund requests for every client to name a few of my responsibilities. I love challenges. LOL

With that said, our budget is small as well.

By the way my first day is this monday morning.I should also mention everything is completely disorganized. It means I am starting from scratch with almost everything.

I really don't have any problem coming up with many the ideas for the higher functioning clients and slightly lower functioning.Finding this site is Wonderful! Thank you. My problem is finding activities, crafts & projects for the severe and profound mental disabilities and they also have physical limitations as well. I hope everyone can see my problem.

I am hopiing someone or many of you can give me ideas for this group. It would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Please give me whatever great ideas everybody would have.

Thank you everyone.

Some ideas for a group of clients with profound disabilities: hand massages with scented lotion and soothing music (you can enlist some of the other residents to help with this), pet therapy visits (Local humane society can provide this), travelogue and concert videos, "nature walks" if you have a scenic area nearby and the weather is ok (residents can assist with this also), and 1 on 1 devotional/reminiscing programs. You would be surprised how many "higher functioning" residents are able and willing to assist with those who need more assistance, allowing you to focus on your client's needs and give other clients a sense of purpose. Hope this helps :)

Hi Kimberly, thats my name too. If you contact me at kimandjim9@comcast.net I will send you some free sample pages from memorystreets question and answer books, they are good to use with ALL cognitive levels...We have residents we didn't even know could speak, answering questions! These were designed specifically for the older generation, I'm sure your residents and families will love them. Also, its fun and easy to just put on some lively music, blow up a balloon, have them try to keep it up in the air, you can also use plastic fly swaters to keep the volly going. Kim
