nelleaustinsmom 0 Report Share Posted July 8, 2009 Hi and thank you in advance for what I know will be GREAT answers!!!! I'm new in the Activities field and am getting the program at our Hospital going from the ground up which as you can imagine has it's ups and downs!! Our Activities program is for Swing Bed and Extended Swing Bed patients some of who have been here for more than 2 years. We're a small rural Hospital. Now that I've gotten my foot in the door a bit I think it's important to decorate our group room, right now it's hospital tan like every other room here. I've done some research and am getting mixed answers so figured who better to ask than the professionals themselves!! What colors do you recommend? My biggest concern are the alzheimer's patients and what colors will be best for them. Wall colors and accent color suggestions would be great!!!! Thanks again!! sams 0 Report Share Posted July 22, 2009 well, I was so excited to see another Swing Bed A/D finaly, and I am in the same boat because we are getting a new hospital too in about two more months and I am so happy, but I am not going to get my new activity room painted different colors just plain ol white, but I would say prime colors, one solid color, or what ever is best for the patients. jeffreykirchofer 0 Report Share Posted July 23, 2009 I have found that with my activity room, the residents were more participative and energetic with bright, energetic colors. Multi colors are great because it begins to stimulate and motive the residents from the beginning of the activity session. Remember no reds or angry colors. I found it easier to search for paints with this approach, "How does this certain color make me feel ? and most of the time the residents feel the same. Hope this helped. lkelley 0 Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 Dani, In our facility one wall of the activity room has a beautiful mural of the Texas hill country with wild flowers. The other walls are a pale yellow. You might see if you can find someone in the community that would be interested in volunteering their time to paint a mural. Murals add interest to the room, making it more inviting. I like the hill country mural because it brings nature inside for all to enjoy. Lori
cbishop5120 0 Report Share Posted July 28, 2009 Dani - You have such a great opportunity! I would definitely say that light bright colors work best. It stimulates the residents, helps with lighting issues, and a solid color will give you the versatility to change decor without having to change everything all at once. Our activity room is also in need of a paint job, but the color that we have on the walls right now, is a light bright color, and it has served our facility well for a number of years. (Not sure exactly how many years!) Curtis
aza9 0 Report Share Posted August 9, 2009 I have worked in swing bed for the last ten months. We had the same issues after some remodeling was done. After doing alot of research both online and onsite, we came to the conclusion that decor should be primarly influenced on what the patients are use too. Meaning our very rural location and our socioeconomic situation be the driving factors in picking the paint and the overall decor. So... we did very simple decorations with painting that refelct our rural area and are reminisce of our state(great state of WV). This has really worked out good for us. Families feel comfortable in the activity area and patients feel more at home. Feeling at home was a big deal and played a huge impact in choosing the decor, seeing as some(most) patients this is truly there home. nelleaustinsmom 0 Author Report Share Posted August 10, 2009 Great ideas everyone!!! I'm leaning towards a yellow/gold color, it sounds hideous but I don't know how else to explain it. It's the color you see alot with burgandys. That is the wall color I'm looking at but I LOVE the idea of the mural and we have a GREAT Arts council in town so I'm going to get in touch with them and visit about that idea. Thanks again and hope to hear more great ideas!!! dani
harrispatrice 0 Report Share Posted August 11, 2009 My suggestion for your Activities Room color is yellow! Its bright and vibrant and trust me residents love the color. You need a color that is not dull, but not too over the top like a lime green. In my facility we have recently painted one of our meeting rooms yellow and all of the residents have been asking me when are we painting our room the same color. The room is two toned with the lighter yellow on top and a darker shade of yellow on the bottom trimmed with white. Its has been such a hit we have nicknamed it the "Sunshine Room." Good luck Patrice
coleizok 0 Report Share Posted August 13, 2009 (edited) Light colors are best for vision issues. History of our old town worked great for resident's and family with soft lights and natural lighting. View your population and interests, you can always change as your group changes just have fun and you are doing a great service in whatever you choose, light colors meet the needs.
