Teaching Computers to Residents

I have just established a computer room and have started "teaching" bona fide computer classes. I wanted to know if anyone else is doing this? I will expand on this topic and give some tips that I have used.

We do not teach classes but I often find one or two residents teaching another. This encourages peer interaction. You can contact your local Collage and see if someone taking a class will teach for free perhaps the teacher will offer extra credit to the student who will do so.

I teach classes all year round to my residents and now I have other residents helping me teach in Chinese and in Russian.

The most popular class is the basic-- how to use a mouse. I know of a great website that helps teach residents how to do this and we just go through it together. it is:

http://www.instruction.greenriver.edu/Aver...MouseSkills.htm

we only get as far as we can in 30 minutes-- which is about page 21 or so.

Then we start over.

I also start with a handout that I made that has a picture of a mouse, and another picture with a hand holding a mouse. There are labels on the different parts of the mouse and then another handout with pictures of the different parts of the computer: tower, printer, monitor, mouse, keyboard, etc.

The second class, we do the website again, and again if needed. We also go over a different handout that shows pictures of the desktop, icons, programs, etc. We learn how to open and close programs and start a game.

Other classes that I do and that are very popular are: email-- basic and advanced, digital photography (a favorite!), Begining and intermediate internet, greeting cards, Google Earth, Troubleshooting, Scams, Frauds and Ads, flashdrives and other storage devices (obviously for the more advanced!)

Google Earth is great because you can show different parts of the world, their hometowns, etc.

Good luck!

Angie

Other facilities are asking for my help with this. I can tell you one thing that I am learning while doing this.....don't be afraid to change your plan. I actually make a "lesson plan" with handouts but I have found that using analogies and asking a ton of questions to my folks is key. I will add to this string, but I enjoy hearing from others. keep going!

I do the same thing with lesson plans! I feel like a teacher! But every time I have a class-- I change and modify to make it evolve into what the group needs at that time. Many times, I have group classes, at least the first class-- and then I break them into individual sessions once they learn the basics. It is too difficult to teach a class who is on so many different levels and learning curves!

The facility where I am working, we do not have computer classes, neither instructors to teach the basics to those resodents who may be able to use the computer. The facility does have a computer in the library that is open to those residents who choose to use it. What I've observed, is that many people are not on the cognitive level to use or even learn about the computer. There are those times where we might get a short term resident for rehab and they use the computer. I would like to build a computer area or room....as space permits, and implement a computer program in Activities

I have been working with several residents to learn computer use. Solitaire is a good way to learn the use of the mouse. This seems to be the first challenge to my residents. I am doing th teaching myself. I'm no expert but know more than they do. Accessing sites of interest to them and helping them set up free private email accounts is a good second step. Some really like the joke of the day. Some have things we are able to research on the internet and find information to answer the questions. Even locating a local restaurant to have the kids take them to and knowing what he menu was in advance. I have no seperate room. just a locking computer desk to avoid staff abuse. We have designated access times. We also do a lot of digital photography which they can view on the computer.

We have got our computer room cleaned out, working on getting the computer, & classes are about to start. Helpful hints or preventative measures are appreciated.

Thanks,

The facility where I am has a high number of younger residents although our residents range in age from22-106. There is the large number of 'baby boomers' coming on board, and then wreck victims, etc. there for rehab because we have a contract with a very large hospital. So, times are changing in nursing homes and so are the numbers of people who already know how to use a computer. I have seen younger residents start college classes on computers while in rehab. If you go ahead with a computer area/room you are ahead of the inevitable.
