Specifically I'm interested in something for Chinese New Year (Jan 26th is the first day this year), but other ideas for crafts, etc would be appreciated. Found out it's Elvis Presley's B-day on the 8th so wemay do a dress up day and some karaeoke, with some peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Thank you so much. Thank you for reminding me of Elvis' birthday. I still needed something special for that week. A Chinese craft we did was to take 11x17 paper and black paint, and paint Chinese symbols on them. We then put them up on the walls and served Chinese food for lunch. Also you can discuss what animal it is the year of. I believe it is the bull. We have a man from China and we were able to ask him questions about his childhood growing up in his village. We also asked residents and visitors what year they were born and looked up what animal they were. Get some placemats from a Chinese restaurant for your info or look it up online Remember MLK Jr day is on the 19th and Inaguration day is the 20th, so you can have themed events around those too. Does anyone know what time the Inaguration speech is to be televised on the west coast? Is it 9:00 or 12:00? The week of the 12th we are having a Hawiian theme to get over the winter blues. jandamusic 0 Report Share Posted January 10, 2009 Hello, For the 2008 Olympics my residents we made Chinese Lanterns. Use a piece of rectangular paper for the base. I found craft paper at Michael’s with Chinese symbols on it. The residents cut out small images from the craft paper and pasted them to the base paper. Then, fold the paper in half-long ways. And make 1 inch cuts along the length of the base. Do not cut through but leave a 1 ½ inch border at the top. Unfold the base and tape together the long sides, creating a cylinder. Put a handle on the lantern! We used these for table décor. Get some Chinese New Year place mats from a local restaurant and complete the meal with fortune cookies. Peace.
