Hi all

I need some ideas for Senior Olympic events for next month.

Thanks!

Hi

Our facility is celebrating the Olympics with an in house Olympic competition. We have a Wii and are providing two practice sessions and a tournament for Wii Baseball, Wii Tennis, Wii Golf, Wii Boxing and Wii Bowling. I ordered Olympic type medals for under $4 each and each tournament will be followed by a medal ceremony. Our resident are very good at bowling but have been reluctant to try the more difficult games. I'm hoping our Olympics will encourage residents to try a new Wii sport and/or be an Olympic Cheerleader.

Good luck!

In our building we have done staff Olympic events. In the staff Olympics’ the residents are the cheerleaders. We give them pom-poms and have them all sit on one side of the hall. Some of the events for employees include wheelchair races, obstacle course, and food contests.

Wheelchair race - we took the persons main side and tried their hand and leg down of that side and then two employees would race. It was really funny when you had a left handed and right handed person race because they would run into each other.

Obstacle course - we sat up chairs and bedside tables and nurses carts and lifts in the hallway and gave the employees glasses with Vaseline rubbed over them and then they had to try to make it through with the quickest time.

Food Contests - we had the employees drink thicken liquids and whoever could drink it the quickest and we also did this with pureed foods whomever could finish eating the quickest.

All of these activities were a ton of fun but it also served as a way to let our staff see what our residents go through day to day in a nursing home.

Hey! We just had our Senior Olympics on Friday and some of the games we played were: Ball Toss where we had four teams of equal members and each had a team leader. Each team had to pass the ball to the end of the line nad back. Who ever did that the fastest won! We also had arm wrestling and basketball. They loved it all!!! We did all this with about 24 members. We also presented them with gold medals that we put on ribbons that we put around their neck...like the real olympics!

What about this idea for Senior Olympics. Is anyone using the WII Games with their residents? We are and have had great results! The easiest game for them seems to be bowling, but they can also play golf, tennis and baseball. The baseball is a little harder for them because they have to both pitch and bat. Anyway, just curious if anyone is using this. Linda

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi there.

I know you needed ideas for your August event, but I thought I'd add my information anyway. We had a GREAT Senior Olympics activity.

We also used most of the residents as cheerleaders (and when we do this again, we'll provide pom-poms too!) We had electric wheelchair races. Pictures taken of all racers. For our Discus Throw, we used a plastic blow-up ball that kinda looks like the planet Saturn (it's easier to hold onto) we had several residents throw this ball and then we measured how far they threw it. We wrote the measurements on white boards (be sure to hold them up) and kept track of longest throw. The winner had their picture taken. We had teams compete against each other for our Shotput Throw. You get a hula-hoop, place it in the middle of the teams, give each team 2 bean bags each, or a total of 4 per team, have them throw bean bags into the hula-hoop. Team that gets the most inside hula-hoop wins and gets to play the next team. Again winners get picture taken. How did we choose the residents to compete? In our group activites we practiced these events and picked those residents that either really enjoyed playing or were very good. For our finale, we had our Administrator and two employees from housekeeping compete in a pie eating contest.(We used chocolate creme pies!) The entire staff and all of our participants enjoyed the show. Our Admin was fabulous...he came prepared, he wore a poncho, goggles, and a hairnet....needless to say, he won!
