Resident-Centered Activities Program

Our organization - composed of six nursing homes in Pennsylvania - is in the early throws of Culture Change and a journey towards more resident-centered care (including more individualized activities). Has anyone on the forum begun the Culture Change journey already? Any tips or links for websites, organizations, etc. that can be a resource? Thank you.

I have done the Culture Change thing twice now. Once at my old facility and trying to implement it at my new. When I first started I thought it was the greatest thing on earth, and still do. However, it is a long and frustrating process at times. get ready to hear a lot of "That's not my job"

I can give you more info if you like, it might take some time to go through all of my files.

However, you can Google the "Culture Change" and I know that AASHA and many other organizations are getting it running. We actually went out to Missouri to see one of the first facilities that started it and that was cool.

Let me know what you find out and I will start looking.

I told you all, that I am doing research on this and I would not give up.....if anyone has anyquestions please let me know. Bigchris

I have read the CMS guidelines for this and taken a look at the tools on the elder4activites web page. Is this a program that an organization just begins, or are you trained in it for a fee ( like the Eden Alternative)

Thank you for the link to AASHA. I have already found the Pennsylvania Culture Change Coalition (my home state), the Institute for Caregiver Education and the Eden Alternative to be a tremendous help. Although we have yet to decide exactly what form our Culture Change journey will take, we have registered seven team members from our company to attend an upcoming Eden Alternative Certified Associate Training in October. We are confident that the overall 3-day training will provide the base information we need to begin our (long & tedious) journey. Have you worked with ActionPact?

I have been a certified Eden Alternative associate for almost two years now. Our management company had a training course for all of our homes. We never implemented the program. Some of our other homes started but never made any progress. I was very excited about the program at first but it takes the whole home to do it not just a few people. The 3 day course is great and really gets you chomping at the bits to get started but I found that it kind of left you with not knowing where to start. The manual is huge and we only went over the first few pages to get the basics. They mainly focused on the ten eden principles. For me, I think it would be easier if I could see another home that had been on their "journey" for a while to see what they had done. What is so bad is when I presented it to the resident council, they looked at me like I was crazy and some said "I like things they way they are". Change is so hard. It's like they say, you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I think you can, it just takes a little longer and a lot of caring people to make it happen. When you take your course, get ready for some strange "tell all" circles where you tell things about yourself you may not ordinarily tell and sing songs, at least we did. Culture change is a good thing and it is where I think we all will have to be in the future. Good luck on your course and your journey into culture change.
