cotabeth 0 Report Share Posted August 18, 2005 I just wanted to check and see if anyone out there had some ideas for doing an activity inservice- in a nursing home setting? I thought I read awhile back of some approaches people had- I didn't want to just stand up and talk. I thought there was a suggestion of putting a pile of apples on a table and asking staff to pick one, look at it, and put it pack in the pile. Then the presenter mixes them up and asks them to try and find their apple. The thought process behind this would be to remember that not all residents needs/interests are the same and how that plays into their leisure interests. Does anyone have some creative approaches to how they inservice staff regarding the activity department?

callie 0 Report Share Posted September 18, 2005 Hi, I just had to prepare my inservice for all the staff where I work, I can tell you that it is very hard to find any info. on the web. I try to involve our staff in hands on learning instead of just speaking to them. I copied Mattie's Poem - What Do You See, Nurse? and had volunteers read a paragraph each. Also, you can do things to teach your staff why adaptive activities are needed. Coat reading glasses with clear nail polish and let them read through them, have them wear several pair of gloves and button a flannel shirt, have them put cotton balls in their ears to listen to you speak, all of these help to develop emapathy with our residents and helps them to understand the importance of adaptive activity planning. I also created an Activity Department Evaluation Form that I passed out to all of the staff with questions like: What suggestions do you have to improve communication between the activity department and your department? What activites would you feel comfortable leading? In your opinion, what can be done to improve activities for our residents. I use the information from these questionaires to better my department and it also improves the relationship between my department and others. OceanGuy23 2 Report Share Posted July 14, 2007 I am just curious to know about how many mandated inservices are activity directors supposed to do for their nursing facilities per year according to state regs. Thanks. OceanGuy23/ActivityMan
Miguel 4 Report Share Posted July 14, 2007 Hey Hey.. Typically I do an Annual "The IMportance of Activities and Leisure" and than additional ones for anything that I need staff educated on.. This would entail using Sensory Stimulation Kits, etc etc. My Volunteer's are required to attend at least one Inservice Training Monthly which would entail new Policy and Procedures that directly impact them such as Hand washing, Resident Rights, Confidentiality, etc etc. -Miguel
OceanGuy23 2 Report Share Posted July 15, 2007 Hey Hey Miguel How are you. I figured it was one inservice a year but it is a great idea like you said to have various inservices on different topics. Very good about making them mandatory for your volunteers. I will have to call you and tell you about what is happening here in the valley, lol. Catch ya later. I can't wait for my class to start in a couple weeks. Yeah!! Kevin from Turlock/OceanGuy23

Perhaps, by way of illustration, you can allow half the room to go somewhere there are donuts waiting and the other half gets stuck sitting in the meeting room - without donuts. The half without the donuts will be a little miffed - justifiably. Sometimes, residents miss out on activities because WE (the activities department) cannot get each and every one to the activity on our own. After the people who left to get the donuts come back, I would ask the other half how they felt about being left behind. Hopefully, you shouldn't have to CONNECT THE DOTS for everyone, but if you have to drive the point home, tell everyone that some residents are being shortchanged because there just isn't enough time for ONE PERSON to bring 30 residents to an activity. Something like that, anyway. Then make sure you bring in the donuts (or pizza or whatever) so the rest can have them.
