wubby1963 0 Report Share Posted June 9, 2007 I keep having aides and nurses interrupting activities, the ones that really bug me that they come in on are ones like sing alongs where I am playing the piano, and ringing bells . The incident was an aide bringing a resident into the group after it had started and deposited the resident in the door way as we were in the middle of the song. Of course my dander was up after happening so many times that I said could they please bring her all the way in the room I had other residents that had left and would be coming back. Of course they set her in front of someone else and they couldnt see, so we moved her again. For one thing my room is to small and so its difficult on bell day or wheel of fortune day when the residents need to see a board, that I have to have them setting in a certain way, of course after the incident the aid went right to the DON which of course hates me also. What to do , afterwards no aides helped me, or talked to me. Seems when I stand up for something and dont let them do it their way they all get made at me. Why is it that no one can bring a resident all the way into the activity room instead of just inside the doorway? I also become irritated when there are interuptions that are not neccesary. Our activity area is also the dining room, so I have kitchen noises and someone always seems to have to come in to chat with the dietary staff during activities. Not to mention the garbage disposal and dishwasher that sounds like it is about to tear half the building down. Our facility actually has a policy against disturbing activities, but it is not adhered to. I have the support of the DON and ADM, but the rule actually being enforced is another story. I'm afraid if I try to enforce it, I may do more harm than good in the way of relationship with the staff. Most of our CNA's are very "tight" with one another. Do one wrong and you've done wrong to them all. I also have a problem with staff coming to get residents during or just before activities. Just as I finally talk a resident into coming to an activity that rarely gets involved, here comes a CNA after them for a bath. As I go down the hall to get someone else, because my assistant and I are the only ones getting residents to activities, I meet the one I just took down with their CNA going to get a bath. It's not like the activity calendar is not posted and no one has any idea when activities are scheduled. I guess these are all mysteries of the life of an AD. TRkathy 0 Report Share Posted June 12, 2007 I have the same problem. But hasn't anyone heard of the new guidelines for state surveyors to follow. It says that the facility should provide all activities, that not only the activity dept. should be responsible for transporting. These are countrywide....CMS. "The powers that be" know about the new activity regs and I have brought it to their attention several times that we are all responsible for making sure activities are carried out but no luck yet. Of course when survey shows up we have staff running over each other trying to get residents to activities. Wish it could be this way all the time. Again, these are the mysteries. bigchris 1 Report Share Posted June 13, 2007 I think that this is an issue in every facility at one time or another. My first step in the process is going to the DON and explaining the whole thing. The fact that the regs have shifted is not really the issue. Unless the CNA is helping a resident into/out of the activity or aiding them , it is an issue of courtesy. The DON should handle this... Now, with that said, sometimes it doesn't happen..... I had one CNA that liked to show out for everyone and test the waters. SHe tried this one day when I had some bad mojo, so as I was leading a craft class she came in and told a resident that she had to leave ( the resident wanted to stay)....any way. I got up in front of 25-30 people and said " Attention please!!! Ms. ______ has something important to tell us! " Of course, this put the CNA in her place ( yes I know it was wrong, and I feel really bad, really I do) but I was in a mood and I had it! emeraldcuteyes 0 Report Share Posted June 14, 2007 Hi y'all, I just stumbled across this site this evening.I just wish I had been able to find this type of site 27 years ago. I was 1 yr out of a 4 year BSN program when I was offered a 4 day a week Activity Director's job.I was 21 years old and loved every minute of it. I worked the other three days a week in nursing doing 12 hr shifts. I did the AD job for 11 years with 106 residents then moved on to 130 residents for another 6 yrs. I kept my nursing job as I took over running the Emergency Room. As I read your boards I see the same problems I encountered at first with the staff, can't believe that nothing has really changed.I have played with the idea of an AD's job once again, this time will be different as I returned to school earning my Masters and Ph.D. Oh yeah I'm a minister for the past 7 years so my patience have grown.
