bigchris 1 Report Share Posted March 24, 2007 As some of you know, I have come to a new facility in the hope that I can build a bigger program. Well, I am getting involved and I am realizing that the "Bingo" factor is very big!!! My question is this... I know of about 10 variations of the regular form of Bingo, e.g Peppermint bingo, Auction Bingo, Picture Bingo, etc.... But I wanted to hear if any of you have great ideas about how to offer a change to the rut that my new folks have had for 2 years. Are there any ideas out there? I would like ot know!!! How many of your res. like to watch The Price Is Right or Wheel of Fortune, something to do with the thrill of games & the control that they have this part of their lives. Yet we get critizied for having it on the calendar when most of our res. love this game. Go figure the powers that be want us to not have on there or only once a month. How about we let the res. make this decision. Oh sorry this was not your question, oops. So anyway most of the games you probably know of but off top of my head I canthink of these: Res Right Bingo. Mommy Bingo, Daddy Bingo, Pokeno, 4 Corners, Black-Out, Six pack etc. Check with a bingo hall in the community they have more ways to bingo that I ever thought possible. I do have a question for you AD's: Is Bingo a social activity? I know it is other things but interested in this specific question, social. Please explain your answer if possible. katlipstick 0 Report Share Posted March 26, 2007 I actually did a research paper on BINGO, and found out that it is beneficial in more ways than one! Being with other people, the competitive edge, the fine motor skills that are required to pick up the chips and place them on a number, multitasking to take care of several cards, remembering what the caller said, just the act of looking at the numbers..we have several residents with macular degeneration who would never think of having what I call a bingo buddy to help them out. The game keeps the brain young by exercising it. We just had a marathon week of bingo every day.. crackerjack bingo, scratch ticket bingo, grab bag bingo, pick a number bingo, family bingo, secret envelope bingo, and just a plain ol' bingo game. The game does drive us all crazy, but we're there for the residents, and they love it. I love watching the residents help each other one minute, and then..watch out if the one they help wins twice in a row, and they haven't won a game, yet. One of my residents with dementia loves to be the one who will sort the cards and set up the chips, and despite having been diagnosed with dementia, he remembers who gets the blue chips and who gets the special basket of red, etc. One resident who neither reads nor writes is in charge of spinning the balls and handing them to the caller. It appears to be an important job for her as she blesses herself before the first spin of every game. I would say that yes....Bingo is a tremendous "social" activity. At my place we talk to each other in between games, we joke and laugh. And we share the win with each other. So I think it would definitely qualify. Pen another thing: As you know I left a conservative facility and came t omy new place . Anyway, my buddy and I (hey littlechris!)have had a running "argument" that Bingo in the NH is not gambling, because the residents do not pay to play.... What do you think???? I would have to say that even if it is not consider gambling by the "terms" of paying to play, you still get the same high when you win. I love to gamble and I would enjoy Bingo as well if I there is a chance I could win! I have had some residents say they think consider it gambling. Have you had any residents not play due to this reason? It may be you need two bingos to win, the kite, upside down V, T etc. We have had a few people say they werent coming to bingo because it was gambling. Then they found out they didnt have to pay to play and started showing up. We play for points and the top three win money at the end of the month. But this month we are playing strictly for fun and socialization because of things that happened over the weekend during bingo. But the new place that I am at has a ton of weight loss so I am going to add some treats to my Bingos as well. I am going to do lollipop bingo and cookie bingo.
