Reason to stay !

I am having doubts about staying at my present position as Activity Director at my facility. The higher ups have decided every resident whether they want to or not will be coming to every activity, they have asked the nurse aides to bring them all down.

I have seen residents who cried coming down the hall way, I have residents that arent appropriate for certain groups not participate and just sit there or they have fallen asleep. I also at times dont have enough room for all of them in the activity room.

Please help me, I am not sure I am looking at this correctly or if I should be more open to allowing this , and if you have any advice to help me thru this trying experience please share it.

Hey there... Been there done that. My Admisistrator even went as far as telling me in front of the residents, that he was going to take the tv out of the room. I have explained per F tags, health and safety, that you can not move a resident to get an resdident out of the activity room. I took things to the resident council. They the residents made the decision about what activities they wanted. In addition, I told the Administrator and the DON that its the choice of the residents, and the regs concerning redidents choice, and the seperation of inapropriate residents in activities. You can get dinged for sleeping residents, non particapating residents ect. I copied the regs and gave them to both don and the administrator. BTW I was offered a job I did not apply for today. I took it. I am still an AD but for another facility. They were also weighing people in the halls and activity rooms, alot of dignity issues. When confronted they stated "well we just wont do it when state is here". I had to get out, but I feel guilty for leaving the residents, I was there voice. T

I know if they should happen to look at the Residents rights handbook or their poolicies and procedures they will realize that anyone whom does or does not qnat to participate is up to the resident and if that is not the case they are going against their rights as residents hope this helps

Hi Wubbley & everyone

It is so sad that the res. are getting the short end of the stick. Admins &DOn's like that really ned to be removed from there current postions. They are treating the res & the Act staff unfairly. We can only hope they can change their ways or know that they will be placed in a facility ran by the same kind of folks when they get older. That being said, you have done what you can. If you must move on you should try to do one last thing for these res. Contact the Omsbudsman for your facility & info them of what is going on so that they can intervern on behalf of the res. They can be the res. & the family members voice(s). If that is not possible, which I don't know it would not be, contact the State & file a complaint against the facility. (you can do this without giving your name) But this approach usually does not work because like someone said "we just won't do it when they are here" is so true. They don't & they (the facility) get away with it.

I am sadden by leaders in our facilities who act like this. They are the folks that set the examples of what they expect of their staff & how the res. get treated. I can only guess what is going on when we are not there. I know that I would not work at a facility like this for very long, I couldn't live with the guilt. I only hope we never put our parent's in a facility like this or as we get older that I kids don't put us in one like it.

I say start looking now for another job & then take it. Just report the facility as you last act for the res. sake.
