Hello all,

My name is Chris and I just recently got a job as the activity coordinator for an assisted living facility. Here is the thing, I have no real idea what I am doing. I have a degree in aviation sciences, which is very not practical for this career field. Though i have no experience or training I do feel a have tons of motivation and the personality required to do this job well.

I joined this forum in hopes of maybe drawing on some of the experience of the people here. So, if it is ok with you guys, expect a lot of questions to come from me.

Chris

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the field of Activities. Just a few words of encouragement for you. Keep your head up. There will be some days when you think "what have I gotten myself into". Keep it up. The field of activities can be very rewarding and exciting at times. Don't get discouraged.

This is the best job I have ever had. Sure sometimes it gets stressful and overwhelming, but if you keep yourself organised that should not happen often. What other job can you plan parties, sit and gossip (that is what one of my reisdents call our 1;1 chats), go out for coffee and lunch with really cool people, play games, sing sogs and dance like crazy, and wear silly red hats (just to name a few fun things we do)?

Use your creativity (or sites like this to get ideas from others) and have a blast...I know I do.

Hi Chris,

One suggestion- this is an exciting and fun job but unfortunately there is also paperwork and state regulations and all that other stuff.Assisted living is probably different from LTC in many ways;just make sure to learn all your company policies pertaining to activities and the state guidelines.Take all the courses your company will allow and hopefully pay for  Then let your personality take over, love your residents and the rest will come naturally! Good luck!

i think you all summed it up perfectly. I do feel overwhelmed at the moment. really thinking about what i have gotten myself into. I know i can do this, tis just going to take time, and a lot of trial and error.

Thanks all for the advice. Talk to you soon...
