  1. Team Games. I too have found that team games seem to work well on our Special Care Unit. Here are some otherthings to try... tossing foam frisbees into a hola hoop or laundry basket, table ball, kickball, toss and catch, parachute games, horseshoes, bowling, and shuffleboard. Each of these games are easily adaptable for the highest and lowest functioning elders.
  2. I care plans. My facility has recently begun using the I Care Plan format. The response from elders and their families has been very favorable. For the activity portions of the care plan I have found it quite simple to express the elders needs in their words. However, the shift from labling "Problems" to 'Interests" has proved difficult for other departments, nursing in particular. Another tool I have begun to develop is the Visual Information Profile (VIP care plan). It is essentially a Powerpoint presentation about each elder and what is important to them in their lives and their preferences in daily care. We use it as a staff training tool.
