We've been asked by Nursing to provide some sort of after meal activity/entertainment, to try to keep residents from heading back to their rooms right after the meal (there are other stations that our lower functioning residents are being fed at & staff isn't as available as they'd like to be at that time for these residents that eat a bit earlier). My hope is that the aide that is scheduled to stay in the dining area to observe for safety will be able to do this - somewhere down the line, but until then, it's the Activity Staff. We are doing trivia, jokes, devotionals, etc for about 10 - 15 minutes, just to sort of slow down that migration out of the dining room. It has boosted the participation of some of those residents who rarely come to group activities, but I'm looking for other ideas to help keep them interested. Of course, residents who do not want to stay are not forced to stay, we are just trying to provide that motivation to stay a bit longer. Thanks in advance for the help! OR a Bingo game (just one) Or how about making placemats with puzzles on them at the copier and have residents finish the puzzles for a prize....what makes us stay longer?????? wonytineres 0 Report Share Posted October 18, 2005 We begin our first groups of the morning and afternoon about 10 minutes after the last meal tray is served. We have found that by doing more frequent, smaller groups we are meeting the needs of more residents. It has required the staff in the activity department to flex our schedules i.e. staggered start/end of day times and staggered lunch breaks so that someone from my department is always available to do a small group/1:1/, etc. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Kristi 0 Report Share Posted October 27, 2005 I work in a social model adult day care. We have a large dry erase board and gather folks around it for a group game. It can be hangman, brainstorming words that begin with a particular letter, guess the word with as few clues as possible, etc. It's popular with all our different groups. DianeCDP 0 Report Share Posted November 4, 2005 After lunch, we started a mini support group run by an activity staff member and co led by a resident we talk about the first time they came to a nursing home, etc to help the new residents get to know one another and vent any feelings they have, we do this twice a week on the other days, we put on "Radio Days" old time radio shows and they love it, they gather around our replica Crosby Radio and listen to the radio shows of long ago!!!!
