seags 0 Report Share Posted May 2, 2005 Does anyone have a resident dog in their facility? What problems have you encountered? I have read somewhere (can't find it now I need it) that resident dogs in aged care facilities can suffer from depression. Any comments appreciated. Wanda 0 Report Share Posted May 3, 2005 It is hard to say. I know that the dogs that search for bodies get depressed when they only find dead bodies. Seems like it wouldn't be as bad at a nursing home. Wanda
Guest Guest_Kathy Report Share Posted May 3, 2005 I know of three facilities in my area that had to "put their dog down" because the animal had inappropriate behavior. I love animals and am a AD. I would not make a dog work 24/7 in a facility filled with all sorts of people and getting all sorts of hand outs and just being run ragged. If a facility had someone bring in a dog for a shift and took the dog home with them, well that would be humane. But 24/7, we don't work that hard! Wanda 0 Report Share Posted May 4, 2005 We have a lady come in from a grooming place with her dog and the residents love him! You could call around to see if anyone is willing to do that. Wanda
Crysty 0 Report Share Posted May 4, 2005 I have worked at two facilities that had dogs, both of them had to be put under, their health seem to decline when brought to the N.H. I do not know if that had anything to do with it, but I wil say that after that one facilities Administrator brought the dog home with her every night and on the weekends and the dog was happy as could be, My facility id also looking at having a facility dog, but I am being cautious, I would rather have a visiting dog. I don't want to take a perfectly healthy dog and give it a terrinble quality of life either. I hope this helps! :-D
StacieO 0 Report Share Posted May 4, 2005 Our DON is really pushing for an in-house animal, but we have a couple of residents who have expressed dislikes or allergies to animals & well, she pretty much has said, "too bad, we're getting one." So - I'm hoping that I've come up w/ a solution, I'll let you all know but here's what I'm planning. My family & I recently moved to "the farm" & we now have a golden retriver, puppy. "Maggie" is 3 months old & is a lovable addition to our family, but is home alone all day during the week, outside. I'm hoping that once she's a bit older, I can bring her w/ me to work, 2 - 3x/week to start with & go from there. That way, she's not home alone everyday, & still gets to run free at home. Hoping this will pacify the DON. She has a few nurses that are also very against animals & I know for a fact, that the night nurse would not hesitate to call me at home (24 miles away) to come in at 2 a.m. & clean up an animal mess. I'll keep you posted once this gets started.
